Thanks chaps....
I'll fit a new condenser and see what happens, yes the points contacts were black.
Today I went over everything again, it started instantly and ran perfectly so I left it running until it was hot. It picked up and ran cleanly, all seemed ok.
I let it cool and then took it out for a run, within yards it was popping and banging again, so it seems to be a problem under load.
