No JPS cars but making up for that was the presence of Gerhard Berger, moonlighting on his Arrows F1 gig. Berger was driving Bob Jane's ex-Schnitzer 635, the car Ravaglia and Cecotto took to 2nd place at Bathurst. John Harvey jumped the start in a big way to be second by turn one, while Johnson had made a magnificent - legal - start to get to the chicane first. Harvey started to fall back into the clutches of the chasing pack, holding off Berger for a couple of laps until the Austrian got down the inside down pit straight. Contact in the braking area saw Harvey dispatch the orange BMW, Berger's race ending in the sand trap. From there, it was all Johnson, winning comfortably from Brock, O'Brien, Finnigan, and Bond (in the Toy Shop Alfa after the adventures at Surfers the week before).
