It doesnt have to appeal to 'motorSPORT' fans because its pulling numbers through the gates who like cars.
There is no debate, fact is its a sport - some people just need to get their head around it isnt about setting the fastest time or getting across the line first. It may be a judged sport but it is no different to a ref at a rugby match or the scoring at most of the olympic games. Its competitive, popular and on the rise and it IS the biggest competition circuit racing event organizers are going to have to beat to get anywhere in these fast changing times...
