Ford GT40
Nürburgring ,31st of May 1964,
the Ford GT 40 had its first race on the 22km track around the old castle in the eifel mountains.
i remember well the blue white car with wire-wheels and the front bonnet design, which differs from the later gt40 cars.
unfortunately this car, which starts the battle of Detroit against Maranello, was later destroyed by Sir John Witmore, while testing it, because of lack of douwnforce.
There were over 100 competitors in this race (starting numbers go up to 144), lots of small sports-car from England came to the Ring , and many nearly forgotten makes competetd there.
It must have been one of the most colourful races ever.
By the way: fomula 1 drivers Phil Hill and Bruce McLaren
wer not lucky with the GT 40, and after reaching the pole in the grid, the car finished early after tecnical problems.
