you shouldn't drive a diesel anywhere near it's limiter.
I drive a Ford TDCi engined car and changing up a gear about 2600rpm does fine for me. when the revs drop back down the torque is right there ready to go. Actually thats the most it goes to with me usually as 70mph in 5th is 2600rpm.
