Because of the split? There was a time where you had good fields for both Atlantic and Indy lights, and that was because there was a perception that open wheel racing in America had a future.

The current negativity around open wheel racing from many previous enthusiasts of open wheel racing is probably the most on-going damaging influence. Yes it needs to be rebuilt but constantly knocking it down won't do that.
The current grid is also very talented. Harvey is the last credible Brit F3 champ, Baron showed his class with the odd USF2000 race last season after winning the French F4 title, Brabham is the Star Mazda win record holder, Razia nearly got an F1 seat, and Chaves and Veach are the top 2!
