That one's been puzzling me for a while- If anyone's got a copy of the race programme for Oulton with the original entry list...
I've got a vague suspicion that the originally intended pairings might have been Hales/Dowsett and Wiffen/Hathaway but wouldn't like to swear to it....
At least you seem to have cleared up the question of which car which car actually raced- Wiffen's #39 (I think) rather than Hales' #38, a detail that I think I've missed out of my transcription of the results- I'll check when I've got access to them again after tomorrow
