Bear in mind that most of those 'family' 4WD vehicles chew through more fuel & punch out more crap into the atmosphere than a (sensibly driven) V8.

Not talking about the little ones but the full size 4WDs.

Problem with academics like ole mate in the linked story is that they live in la la land - if fuel prices go up it does slow down sales of supposedly thirstiest cars but ultimately people still tend to buy what they need and just use them less, so there's a lower quality of life as people do less stuff that they would otherwise enjoy.

The other factor to consider is available options to get around. Public transport generally ain't that useable in Oz compared to many countries so in many parts if the country, people still need cars & if they have a family, a full size car, whether that is an SUV or sedan or whatever.

The other point of course is that if fuel goes up, so does inflation, which drives up wage increases & we all end back in a similar place.
