I think the comment regarding the irrelevance of salary levels referred to what the salary compromised of. Therefore if a driver were to sign for, say, Ferrari, the notable thing is the amount they are paid from the team. The fact that only a small amount is for driving the car, whilst the majority is from being nice to sponsors or being seen using a certain product makes little difference to the final outcome.
