GTO was coined by Ferrari for the racing version of their 250GT in 1962, the 'O' standing for 'Omologato', pertaining to the fact that this race car was homologated as a production model for the FIA's rules, with a minimum production of 100 units.
It's said that there were fewer than the hundred ready when the FIA men came to count, and that the count was halted for a cuppa while the fifty cars were moved from the first warehouse to a second one... in time for the refreshed FIA men to resume their count...
