from assoc press

INDIANAPOLIS -- Formula One drivers are donating race helmets and uniforms to help raise money for the children of victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Fifteen of the series' 22 drivers already have made donations and the rest will after the season finale in Japan, Indianapolis Motor Speedway president Tony George said Monday. The speedway will collect the items and arrange for their sale or auction.

"This is a gracious gesture on the part of the drivers," George said. "Formula One fans around the world will have an opportunity to help the survivors of the attacks by purchasing these special items."

Mika Hakkinen, who won the U.S. Grand Prix on Sunday, donated his uniform, as did Rubens Barrichello, David Coulthard, Jarno Trulli, Jean Alesi, Juan Montoya, Olivier Panis, Jacques Villeneuve, Enrique Bernoldi, Nick Heidfeld and Kimi Raikkonen.

The speedway received helmets from Michael Schumacher, Ralf Schumacher, Giancarlo Fisichella and Jenson Button.

The other drivers who will make donations after the Japanese Grand Prix on Oct. 14 are Fernando Alonso, Tomas Enge, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Eddie Irvine, Pedro de la Rosa, Jos Verstappen and Alex Yoong.
