Servicing Lenses
Do people get lens serviced?
How often do lenses need to be serviced and how would one recognise a lens that needs to be serviced (apart from a crack in the glass or something blindingly obvious ). Thanks! |

It varies from lens to lens. One of my zooms, which gets a lot of use, seems to have a problem with the water resistant seals on the zoom control and minute amounts of dust have been seen between the elements. It generally goes back to CPS each winter for a refurb/clean. Other lenses have not seen a technician since I bought them.
I think that as they wear, we as the user adapt to each lens, and probably only notice a sloppy focusing ring etc if someone else picks it up. Apart from the aformentioned zoom, my lenses only go back to CPS if they have an obvious fault, or they get a severe knock to check all ok. Problem once the season starts is often finding the time to get lens in to CPS, even if they do usually get them sorted in 2-3 days. |

I see, thanks. No real hard and fast rules then.
I might give the shop a call at lunch and ask what they would recommend for this model of lens. I bought it last year 2nd hand but don't think it would have had a service for a while and it is a few years old. |

I called a place nearby me today and asked for advice. The lady was quite honest and said she wouldn't really recommend it unless there was something seriously wrong with the lens ie that it wouldn't autofocus at all.
I think I'll leave it for now - the problem is probably behind the lens not in the lens Forgot to ask a price bella, sorry. |

Last time I had my 100-400 Canon cleaned/serviced etc, it did need a new mount as it was a bit loose, was around £180 inc vat. if I recall.

I use an independent repairer. Bloody good bloke. Works from home.
A colleague of mine has just had his Nikon 300 2.8 lens serviced.... £40. He has never known it so good! Last time he sent a lens to Nikon to be serviced £250! He will clean my CPU for £15 within the hour! |
