Philippe Adams.
Raced for Lotus in Spa and Estoril in 1993. Can't remember if he did Monza as well, but he was awfull. |

Has the driver got to have actually raced, or just failed to qualify?

How about that forgetful Canadian, Allen Berg? Raced for Osella in the early 80's, I believe.
And this is no. 1000! Warm up that Ferrari for me, please! Last edited by senna12; 28 Mar 2003 at 00:30. |

Bernie Ecclestone with 2 x DNQ
most driver lists don't even include him as ever having raced in F1 maybe the Poison Dwarf couldn't see over the steering wheel |

I was going to vote Jean-Denis Deletrash but I see that he was already mentioned.
So I would have to nominate Paul Belmondo. |

Gaston Mazzacane and Pedro Diniz are the worst I have witnessed since I began watching F1. Sure, Diniz was close to Hill at Arrows, and even Alesi at Sauber sometimes, but he was rubbish.
From history, Belmondo, Pease, Deletraz and Giovanni Lavaggi or "Johnny Car Wash" |

You're all in recent history mode - I suspect that there were a lot of awful drivers around much earlier than the 80's/90s....

This is a tricky thread as you're unlikely to remember the really awful as they come and go too quickly. I seem to remember de Cesaris being pretty dodgey as he tended to crash a lot AND hold up the leaders when being lapped. Wouldn't have him as worst though because he kept plugging away and did have his moments (a pole at Long Beach in '82).
I agree with Ayedasi that the worst drivers of the '80s and '90s were probably better than the worst drivers of the '50s (in fact, Moss has said the same). How about Robert Montgomerie-Charrington! Partly picked him due to his name and partly because he was an amateur racer who, apparently, was outclassed in F3 but who somehow managed to start some GPs - including the championship race at Spa - in 1952 before giving up for good. Never scored a point. Finally, I think you're a bit harsh on Diniz DNQ. I know he wasn't great, but he did improve and was able to score a few points during his career. There are many, many worse drivers who never managed to score a point or even look like being competitive! |

I think the worst drivers of the 90s were probably as good as the midfield runners of the 50s. A lot of wealthy amateur were involved in those days, who were worse than the paydrivers we've had more recently.
I couldn't posisbly name many of them, but one recent guy who deserves a mention is Ricardo Rosset. having came 2nd in F3000 he should've been pretty good, but he was always hopelessly off the pace. Andrea Chiesa comes to mind as well -7/10 DNQs in a car Tarquini later qualified ahead of a Ferrari (admittedly in 1992). Bad though Lavaggi was, he has nowhere near as bad as Deletraz, one of the few drivers ever to leave Murray Walker virtually speechless. |

But yes, as you say, not in the same 'league' as Al Pease or Taki Inoue or someone. Last edited by DNQ; 28 Mar 2003 at 11:11. |

Most drivers I am thinking of have already been mentioned. But Deletraz would surely have to take the cake as worst driver ever, or at least of the modern period.

Most terrible drivers get filtered out in lower formula's. We once had a guy(Mark Haswell) that really wanted to be an F1 driver but he was terrible, my dad told him just how bad he was and he ended up crying about it. Another guy who make me laugh (and as his dad is rich enough, im surprised he hasnt been in F1) is former F3 driver Peter Nilson

Delatraz has to be the worst! He made Alex Yoong look like a World champion!
Other very bad drivers, Belmondo, Lavaggi, Rosset, Dalmas, Inoue and Adams. |

This thread comes up every 2 months or so!
Jean Denis Delatraz without a shadow of a doubt. Makes Taki Inoue look like a genius. Incidently has anyone read the F1Rejects Guess Book. Inoue signed it and wrote "I love you Guys you think Delatraz is worse than me!" |
