Janspeed Datsun Cherry & Sunny

Some time ago some of us discussed the Janspeed Datsun cherry and Sunny cars on the Janspeed 240Z thread. Now, as I don’t want to hijack that thread for discussing the other cars I thought let’s make a dedicated one. Underneath is some of the stuff I found and links to relevant posts in the other thread.

Now I hope we can find out a bit more about these cars, how good they actually were and what happened to them.

Sunny:

Cherry:

In the attachments are some pics I found on other websites. Now let's see if we can establish how many cars were actually built.

That Pearson 100A ended up in Ireland in the late '80s where ex Mini 7 racer "Big Tom" Kinsella raced it in the "up to 1350cc GT" class. It was quick in a straightine, as far as I remember, but no match for the semi spaceframe Imps of Dan Rooney and Richie Baird.....
Must dig out a pic of it......

Tourist Trophy 1973

The Alec Poole/Tom Walkinshaw Datsun Sunny at the Tourist Trophy at Silverstone, 23 September 1973. Finished a creditable 9th place, completing 128 laps in the 2 x 2 hour races (Winners were Derek Bell and Harald Ertl in an Alpina CSL, completing 150 laps, and defeating the three-car Ford Cologne Capri team)

That particular car was built by Nissan's works race team in Japan, and was brought to Europe as a fully-fledged and already-blooded race car.

It was passed fully into Janspeed's hands after it's first few races in the UK. Nissan works ace Moto Kitano drove it at Silverstone, and at Mallory too I remember?

It's good to see this thread taking off! What I've been wondering about the Sunny which came from Japan is how many seasons Janspeed actually used the car? The later Datsun Sunny has a very different set of wheel arches which seem to be very nicely detailed and not bolted to the as on the car that came from Japan.

Interesting to see the chopped a bit of the front bonnet of the Cherry at one stage in its life, must have had a (tiny) aerodynamic advantage..

It has popped up again over here, for sale! Looks rough and the race engine is long gone but it could be an interesting project for somebody!

Got given a drive in the ADM/Toshiba Datsun Cherry in production saloons back in 1974 until ADM went under. Great fun, but another who raced one - called Alistair Darroch (I think) - found they could tip over quite easily!!

Interesting, sadly I only saw your post just now! Would've loved to see how it looked now, sadly ad has already expired. Any idea who actually bought it?
