First aid training is always useful, but not a necessity.

I take it that the reference to first aid refers to the upgrading requirement to include a module on 'basic first aid'. It has been included on an occasional basis at training days, which I've attended and generally focuses on what needs to be done, when first on the scene of an incident. As I understand it, the first aid element need not be a course organised by the likes of the St. Johns.

I'm sure that uncle Chris will be along later, but recall him mentioning that this module is to be rolled out later this year, well in time for those collecting their second training sigs for upgrade.

Hopefully, out training will be much closer focused on motorsport incidents, rather than "normal" HSAW etc care?

Maybe a module on heatstroke & hypothermia would be useful ......

When I realised that there was a very, very good chance that it would be me who was the "first person on the scene" I took a first aid course with the SJA, it wasn't madly expensive, 130 quid or so, it was specificity a sports injury course and lasted the day. I am pretty sure that it does not count towards upgrading though. I'm sure that there are some who might say that "outside" qualifications should be included in your grading.
I would recommend a course like this, I have done the msa module and although it is very informative it was only an hour or so long and so limited by that.

Have a look at this thread re. non-marshalling first aid skills -

http://www.ten-tenths.com/forum/showthread.php?t=132084

A St Johns/Red Cross first aid course would be a very useful thing to attend but don't expect it to count towards your marshal's training.

Umpteen years ago at Donington, didn't a doctor (Mark?) do a regular First Aid session on training days? I remember it was fascinating and hugely useful. Why did these briefings stop? (Presses button to launch JimW...).

There was also a paramedic called Mark at Oulton who used to do the same thing, I think.

Am I getting my Marks confused? Is my mind going...?

There was a first aid module at the Goodwood training day last November,
It wasn't very long, about an hour, but covered a few basics like cpr, which is always going to be useful to know. I'm sure that if "the powers that be" were to contact someone like the St. Johns ambulance there could be a first aid training day provided by them, I would have thought that a room full of Marshals could get the price for the day down to £40 or less. Naturally that would only work if it counted towards grading but if a course were worked out that covered what we need to know I wouldn't be surprised if they (or another professional body) were receptive. Or would that open can of worms??

"basic aid" has been a required training element for a while so should already be being included in training days for u/g to Experienced at least and may have featured in the general marshalling or incident handling areas if not a specific item.

Getting first aid training from a recognised body such as Red Cross or St John would certainly be a worthwhile thing for individuals to do anyway as you never know when you might be able to put it to use in day to day circumstances.

I certainly don't think we need to start going around trying to create whatever people might "think" is needed for the forthcoming "basic first aid" training module that will be required for upgrade to Experienced ..... what it appears we do need though is some idea of what the module will be and how/when it will be delivered.

As Steve Fox says - a basic aid session has been covered at Goodwood marshals training in the past and I know it has also been covered by BARC in theirs (at Thruxton). ...... it is purposefully very, very basic based in my expereince - whether the new "basic first aid" module will be any different and cover different items remains to be seen.

As Richard says - he is working on the first aid module (although I am not sure what the First Marshal On Scene(FMOS) module is to be as this isn't listed as being one you need a signature for in the requirements .. so I presume it is actually a sub-module )

Finally, to go back to a point from the original post about "need training days over 2 days" - remember that training signatures are limited to one training day per calendar year (ie 2 days = 2 years).

The First aid training given at Thruxton and Goodwood delivered by a very experienced MSA trainer employed by a local authority ambulance service who has been in the business of training and assessing for just shy of 30 years with a long list of qualifications and to add credibility, operational experience.
The training given was based on resuscitation council guidelines basic life support ie CPR care of an unconcious patient etc. This is the same basic training that as minimal standard is delivered to other bodies including healthcare professionals outside of their normal working envoirement

Not breathing call the ambulance!!
Breathing!!! recovery position call the ambulance!!

Also despite what people seem to think a person cannot for a number of reasons decide to design and sell a course under some fancy name and decide what is and is not included in the course (clinical governance).
For future input on what you want to see included in your first aid courses on your training days give feedback to your credible training staff and, as well as BLS you could very well get the training you want and deserve.

Stay safe!

Some months have passed and many things have moved on since this thread inclusdng the work being done with the BHF and also the thoughts BARC have as per the last Startline. As for what any future MSA training module for "firs aid/basic aid may eventually contain I will both wait and see and hope that those putting it together know what they are doing.

Having attended both Thruxton and Goodwood sessions in the past I can certainly recommend them - and those giving them.

Dave

Don't recall mentioning you by name Richard sorry if I touched a nerve there.....
Your reputation precedes you. Army was n't it or north sea helicopter rescue?

I am well aware of what Heartstart is all about just don't see the need to give a fancy monicker like "First marshal on scene" (re your previous thread) to what is in effect Basic life support.

Not breathing? call the ambulance--CPR.

Breathing-yes-recovery position call the ambulance. I f it works for everybody else it should be ok for us marshals to do enough to keep someone alive

I'm sure your qualifications are all jolly nice and you must be really special
