Ohhhhl OK, but down here we tend have more composure and just raise an eyebrow when someone is....well.... is indiscreet....five complete rolls (with pike) through a gravel trap might invoke an....."Ï say!"
That doesn't negate someone getting proper training and I'm surprised that anyone would think that it did.
don't quite understand that one....two great nations seperated by a common language

When I have a newbie with me I usually try and balance serious instruction with light hearted banter.....as it should be....we usually have enough misery to cope with without being sour pusses to boot

[QUOTE=... a new marshal must accept that they will meet such people as well as normal ones.[/QUOTE]
Who are these "normal" ones of which you speak?
Marshals - Normal
Normal - Marshals
Nope, sorry, don't see the connection.

Does the first day's marshalling experience affect whether a volunteer will come back for more? Maybe. My first weekend was at a very dull Rockingham meeting. While I love Rockingham as a spectator circuit, I am not convinced about it as a marshalling circuit.
Part of the problem is that it was very poorly manned so on the three ocassions I have been there there have only two of us on the post. As a trainee, if the other person is flagging, what do you do? You can't push a car on your own. Having said that, the first weekend I was able to do the flags while my "partner" (different each day) was the observer and generally kept an eye on me. From where I was I could just about see the numbers on the totem pole so I could keep up with what was going on, on the Saturday. On the Sunday, we had a 5 hour Uniroyal "Fun" Cup race and the totem wasn't working. Plus we couldn't hear the commentary so I had very little clue about what was happening. Had I not been decided, I may not have bothered again, not from any one thing but just because it maybe wasn't as enjoyable as I thought.
However, I had more or less decided I would "take up marshalling" before I went. For various reasons I wanted to get out and meet new people. It was basically a choice of going and watching racing on my own or joining the club. I am glad I carried on because I have had some great times and met some wonderful people.
One suggestion I might make to make newcomers feel welcome, is that if there is a regular visit to a particular pub afterwards which "everybody" knows about so nobody actually discusses it, it might be nice if somebody makes a point of inviting the newcomer.

I believe it does. To quote the old cliché, 'you only get one chance to make a first impression'.

At Oulton Park & Anglesey both BRSCC NW & BARC NW invite all marshals for a drink at Race Control at the end of the day. For me, it's an important part of the day's activities.

I went straight back to the caravan for a few cold ones, BUT have to say as a regular it world have had a similar effect on me and my views.
Best way to view Marshalling:-
F1 and TOCA (to a certain extent) - Expect nothing and you wont be disappointed.
All Club Meetings - Expect nothing and very often you may get the odd win on the raffle, free beer, £5, £10 or even a big thanks from the drivers!
By the way... I personally did enjoy my Oulton BTCC weekend!!

At Silverstone we always adjourn to the White Horse Pub in Silverstone village, @ Mallory the clubhoudse is compulsary, they even lay on a cabaret starring Mark & Shelley. So I'll see you all in there this Sunday, might even put my hand in my pocket.

To be honest, I'm seriously wondering if I'm going to bother anymore.
Seems like everything is unprofessional if it in any way involves having fun.
Apparently if I want to have a joke and bring Alien Marshal to the circuit then I have nothing to offer as a marshal.
I think it may be time to hang up the probans as I can think of better things to do with my weekend.

Isn't that a little unfair on Alien Marshal?

Not really - he has exactly the same problem with the PC people as I have. What I look for in a marshal is the ability to do the job - all aspects of it where possible.
I don't judge them on their sense of humour or whether they own a cuddly toy - just their ability to perform where it counts.
From what I've seen here lately and what I've experienced on the bank, ability is now probably a lower priority than it has ever been.
