Bert Ray
It has come to my attention that Bert Ray passed away this morning. I know he has not been well all year.
I am sure everyone will wish Berts family their deepest sympathies and condolences at this sad time. I didn't know Bert very well, but he was a fiesty bloke, who put up with his illness without comment and was a true competitor, gaining pleasure every time a Ray car did well. Andy, Stuart, Ian and Diane Gough. |

A truly nice guy, a true gentleman of the sport. He built a fine car that, in our era in FF, halted the dominance of VD and Mygale.
Sympathies to Gavin and his family, Ivan Foster. RIP Bert. |

Never met Bert, but bringing his chassis' to the top of FF's has really added to the already to the spice and competition of FF. In both Duratec and 1600.
Quite sad news. Ray were, and probabily will, rise to the top. May Gavin and his crew continue their hard work in building superb race cars. Lets make sure a Ray wins the WHT again, quite a fitting tribute to a great chassis builder. Make all the 'Blue Ribbon' events a Ray succession. My thoughts with Gavin, wife, and his family and many friends. RIP Bert Last edited by youngoldy; 26 Oct 2007 at 17:20. |

Very sad news indeed! thoughts are with Gav and the family. He was always passionate about his cars doing well and we always felt part of the Ray family. He really was one of the most cleaver people I have known!

Very sad.
I always enjoyed watching the Rays be the underdog against the works cars over the years. With the WHT coming up, maybe there should be some kind of tribute?...maybe a demo of the Rays taking part? RIP Bert Ray. |

Bert was a true gent, he was a a real motor racing enthusiast, he was never there for the money! he loved it. He got great pleasure from seeing his cars do well. I will always have a soft spot for bert, you could give him a call about something small and two hours later you found yourself still talking to him because he had a vast amount of knowledge and everything he had to say was so interesting. Its very true what matt said you were always felt part of the Ray family.
A tribute to Bert at the WHT would be very fitting considering he gave his whole life to formula ford. My thoughts are with Gav and the rest of the family. Goodbye and RIP Bert. |

Has something been arranged?
Minutes silence before the final? Has anyone spoken to James? |

Very Sad, first met him 3 years ago, and we got on right from the off. He was always good to talk to about anything, and usually our conversations drifted into 70s F3 cars and model boats. As Nev said, you would call to ask about wheel bearings and talk for hours. We had our differences from time to time as thoughts and emotions flaired but I always respected him, and it is quite sad that the last time we really spoke was arguing over an invoice.
RIP Bert |

What very sad news. Bert was one of the true enthusiasts in motor sport and a rare commodity in that you could always trust him. He could also guarantee to raise a smile with some of the most non p-c stories imaginable!! Formula Ford meetings will miss Bert, and it seems somehow fitting that both main races at last week's Festival were won by Ray chassis. My condolences go to Gavin and the rest of the Ray family.
Cheers Bert.... |

Talking to my father about Bert last night we calculated we had known him for over 30 years. Having first meet Bert before I was even at School going with my father when he needed parts for his Crossle (Bert was an agent). Then having Rays from the 80FF to the 92FF which my father raced and then the GRS05 which I raced for 3 years which Peter now races. My last contact was an email congratulating him and Gavin on winning both Festivals at last.
Think Nev, Matt and others have summed up how great Bert was, his life was his cars he wasn't in it for the money at all but the pure pleasure from his cars do well. We would talk for ages about set up especially with my dad's cars and he would always say or you could always buy some new tyres knowing they were probably at least 6 races old. He will be sadly missed, RIP Bert Last edited by Triple J Motorsport; 30 Oct 2007 at 11:28. |

Minutes silence never took place! Unless moved to earlier in the weekend?
Got our letter published by Autosprout this week though... |

Whether there was a minutes silence for Bert at the WHT, I'm sure 3 heat wins, two semi wins and the Grand Final victory was very much a fitting tribute to Bert.
A truly dominant weekend for Ray race cars. I'm sure for all Ray owners, it was an emotional weekend. A weekend packed of great racing. Perhaps the best WHT there has been. And Ray won that as well !!! What a great legacy Bert has left for Ray. |
