That fits in with the info I have, Doc's car had a big-block in it later IIRC.

As for Alan Mann cars - last one I saw was a Falcon, with all sorts of trick bits and lightweight panels on it. But that's another story.

I've been flicking through my photo albums and have found a few pictures of Doc Merfield's 'Fraud' Cortina at Castle Combe, June 1966.

Doc Merfield's Cortina's

My name is Jon Doubleday and whilst on holiday I had some time to play and with interest found this debate on Doc's cars.
I brought Doc's Mk2 Cortina back in 1979 unfortunately less engine and box
It is white with a blue stripe running from front to back(photo on www.merfield.co.uk photo no. 016)
The car has alloy panels-bonnet, boot and doors. The back axle is a tarus four linked with Watts linkage, double struts on the front, the charging system was run off the prop shaft with dynamo mounted where the hand-brake originally was, hole cut in rear of bonnet for carb induction etc
I still have the scrutineering passes from various meetings and when I get home will post dates and tracks on site together with some photos
Back in 1979 we were told that the engines had been sold to a guy for power boat racing! and would love to know if anyone has further info on them
I still own the car - its the only car I've owned and never driven but as I'm celebrating my 50th this year and the 30th of owning this car I made the decission to get it racing again
The car has been at the fabricators for the last 6 months (no need to rush now hey!) having updates ie a full roll cage as the original was only a rear cage and is now with a garage that look after other cars for me. We have dropped a Ford cross flow (my old Autocross David Rowe screamer) into the oversized engine bay - original bulkhead partly cut away for the Climax - and set it as far back as possible. This car is so light that it should fly although not as high as with the Climax
I compete in Sprints including the Brighton & Hove Speed Trials and Hillclimbs and looking through the various photos of the Doc noticed his Mk1 running at Brighton(together with his girlfriend/wife also driving) and wondered if anyone knows if the Mk2 ran there?
Anyway I've been waffling on too long so I'll finish now but when I'm back home I'll gather some more details - I hope this has cleared up some missing info about the 'Doc'

The Mk 2 had the climax engine in it early 70's.Chas Beattie added the extra front dampers and also modded the rack to correct bump steer

Merfield

Did the Mk2 Cortina have an FPE V8 or an FPF 4 Cylinder in it. There are number of pictures of the FPE V8 on I think Merfields website.

Did the Tranny get out of shape trying to avoid the photographer? Is there a 'next' photo in the series?

Hi all, Kevin Bolton here, Brian Boltons son.....Interesting thread...Dad Bought the Fraud Cortina from Doc Merfirld and went on to win the 1968 saloon car championship.
At present, he is trying to find out if the old car is still in existance as he would like to get it back to maybe restore to race again. Anyone have any info on this?
Expect him to pop in onto this thread as i have sent the link so i.m sure he can clear up some of the questions you all my have, & post some pics!!
Cheers for now

Some interesting info has recently popped up on the Doc Merfield car...
Heres a link to some pics showing what looks to be the car fitted with a CHEVY V8 engine!!.... This must have been before the 289 and the contributor to the link I found these pics in claims they are from 1962... which I doubt... Anyone know anymore??

Clever thinking today is that a big single Holley would give better results than that set up.

Terry Sanger

Dated August 29th 1966, is a programme I have with Terry Sanger at the very bottom of the list. He's driving a Ford Lotus Cortina. This is 45 years ago!
Although I raced against Terry, it was very rarely, and mostly down at Brands Hatch. This was of course before he went into a bigger engined car.
