SAFETY

Are firesticks safe as an in-car extinguishing system?

I don't quite get what you mean? As in a fire stick used for acrobatic display?

I think he means one of these:

At only 300g power/8g of CO2 content I'd be surprised if it has sufficient capacity. Anyone?

Maybe if you dropped a book of matches and they all went off at the same time.

I would think that 300g of powder isn't going to make a dent in anything significant. From multiple training sessions with real cars I know it can take 4 full-sized extinguishers to put an established car fire out.

Given that the Motorsport Ireland yearbook says that for rallies a minimum of 1 2Kg powder handheld is required that's 7 of those sticks.

Might make an interesting addition to the dedicated marshals bat-belt though.

Simply put - NO!

Plumbed in systems require nothing but "damm, I'm on fire..." then pull a cord/button. They then have outlets directed at you directly, you feet (in a good install) as well as at the engine, fuel system and fuel tank. The result is that they will nip most issues in the bud and will still keep things at bay if you gave got out until marshals get there or worse if you cant get out of the car etc...

The 'stick' requires you to work which may often be the case!
