Anyone remember this ?

Does anyone know whether they attempted to build the cars in the end or not?

Not sure, they certainly didn't make it to the first weekend if I remember correctly.

It never happened, and was never likely to either. The Punto would have needed some major bodywork extensions to meet the minimum length regs, and as a 3-door wouldn't have been eligible anyhow.

Based on what I've seen of the Abarth championship that car would've been on its roof at pretty much every round!

Punto is a lot longer wheelbase than the 500 that they use in the abarth series. Punto uses Vauxhall Corsa chassis

I seem to remember Gow remarking at the time: "Not grand enough..." Which I think sums up the idea. Still, it would be nice to see something Italian in the series, perhaps the Giulietta, or the Giulia whenever it finally appears?

I think the Giulia will probably be too big and heavy, especially if they base it on the 300 chassis like the new Lancia Thema..

The Giullietta would make a great current generation touring car, but there is no one out there with the funds to develop it as a privateer entry, and there will be no works money.
