You can see why people go for a GP over an event like the World Cup or Olympics due to the value for money it offers compared to these, depending on it's location and calendar date i.e. Istanbul would possibly have better attendance's if it was held in August, it it was originally scheduled. so it could cash in on tourists putting the GP as part of a two week break.

No, not really. A new GP circuit is supposed to be particularly suited to F1, so it may not work well for other series, though they don't tend to work terribly well for F1 anyway.
Disregarding that matter though, as a rather minor issue on the whole, the new GP circuits tend to charge so much to other users (trying to recoup the costs of construction, not to mention the annual sanction fee for F1) that virtually nobody but F1 uses them. They effectively become minimal-use, white elephants. World Cup or Olympic venues can be used for their designated event types after the Olympics/World Cup are long over. So, not only are they built for an event that gets a bigger TV audience than F1, but they also are much more viable for use for other events afterward. Also, a city/country does not necessarily have to build all-new facilities for the Olympics or World Cup. London will build a new aquatic center and ceremonial stadium, but they will also utilize Wembley and Wimbledon. |

Spotted on local Austin Tv over the weekend, a report that stated that state officials had traveled to Silverstone to check the facilities etc & came back with a positive verdict.
Also stated was the news that the track location will be revealed this week. As it happens there was news a few weeks ago that a horse race track in that area was to close in August. ( Manor Downs ). My bet is this will be the location, 9 miles east of Austin, in Manor,Tx |

You're dead right about those tracks recouping their costs, they are hardly going to attract other series. |

Ignoring the fact it's Tikle doing the track, I'm happy they're building a purpose built track for F1.

What other series are going to be hosted there, they've got to make the money back somehow and they won't do it with one GP year?

The one saving grace here could be what Tilke produced with his design for Atlanta Motorsports Park. It's not long enough for F1 to consider, but it does show the guy can actually do a pretty good job. I just hope the place gets finished so we can see what the final product looks like in person, or on YouTube.
That site there near Austin is certainly large enough to build something of the scale of Road America, and still have room for the support facilities. |
