Kimi on Montoya second best of all time! Mansell past 10 people at Hungary in 1989 and one of them was Senna!

Massa on Trulli at Imola last year is one that sticks in my mind for some reason.

Yes, probably. But there was something about it that looked really ballsy on Massa's part that impressed me.

what about long beach 1982(?), John Watson's so called lap of the gods, overtaking 3(?) cars -for position and not overtaking - in one lap, awesome

Yes, I think that lap was at Detroit in '82, though he did a similar performance the following year at Long Beach!
Mansell figures highly in my personal list, Mexico '90 being possibly my fave. I'm not a fan of Piquet, but his move on Senna at Hungary was pretty impressive too. Outside of F1, Zanardi has to be the man. He did several great passes, though the Laguna one is the one that stands out for me. I can't understand those that criticise that move; it was ballsy, imaginative and, as Lee says, was not against the rules at the time (I did feel a bit sorry for Bryan though!). |

What about Raikkonen on RS at Brazil 03. Around the outside! on the wet line as well.
I really got hardly any attention.....but then again, it was damn hard to pass in the wet. What about DC on MS at the end of the straight in Barcelona, right around the outside....nice as well. In terms of the best.....well, in recent times, Mika on TGF at Belgium....brilliant! That of course is made even more stunning at the fact that Mika very rarely ever passed anyone, especially fighted with MS before. |

Herowassenna has let off steam!
Good points though! What is the worst overtaking move ever? Irvine on Alesi at A1 Ring 1997 is a good example! |

As for Senna, he qualified on pole SO often that if someone did have a better race than him they pretty much had to overtake him to win! Still think Nige is the greatest overtaker, though don't know whether I'd go so far as John and imply that that means he was the greatest racer, though I guess that depends on what your definition of 'racer' is. |

Hill on Schumacher - Hungary '97 - purely as a totally inferior car passing "aren't I the greatest ever" in a championship winnig car, on merit.
And Barichello on Raikonnen Silverstone '03 for the determination that it was going to happen no matter what! |

I don't consider a "balsy move" to be a the only ingredient in a good pass. Passes must be fair. Anyone can throw their car into a position that makes the other guy decide if he wants to crash. Would anyone be cheering MS's praises for a "good move" in his championship deciding kamakazi moves?
Relating to the Zanardi issue, the above covers it. Herta was such a meek driver. When Zanardi nearly killed Andretti with a "balsy move" it was 'entertaining' to watch, but it wasn't good racing. Neither was the corkscrew move. Had it been PT or Christian instead of Herta, Zanardi would have looked like an idiot there too. Last edited by Snrub; 14 Aug 2003 at 03:20. |

Zanardi at the Corkscrew for me. If you played the beta version of the CART racing game the following year, if you played as Herta, Zanardi would pass you there on the final lap every time and there was nothing you could do about it.
The interesting thing is that Alex did the same thing (accidentally) in a test at the track prior to the race and realised that, despite bumping the car over the kerbs on the exit, he could still get the car around the last few corners, even with dirty tyres. Tells you what a racer he was. The other one that I never get sick of watching (OK, it is on 2 wheels, not 4) is Schwantz on Rainey on the final lap, on the way into the stadium in the 1991 German 500 GP. Wayne leaves him zero room, but Kevin locks the wheels, skips the rear and sticks his knee in the Yamaha's fairing on the way through. All from a speed of around 180mph. Stunning. |
