Longford Tas 2005

Return to Longford (Tas) March 2005 - Jack Brabham & Chris Amon head the cast in a big Friday before historics at Symmons Plains over the weekend.
In addition to the proud open wheeler history incl the 30th AGP (1. McLaren 2. Brabham 3. Hill) it was the site of the 1962 Australian Touring Car Championship won by Bob Jane in his 3.8 Mk 11 Jag - tourers are all the go in Aus. Cant understand why the McKay 3.4 is going to be there & there are no plans(?) to get the Jane Jag aout of the Bathurst museum.
Lets hope it gets plenty of support.
How about getting Damon Hill out to punt the Brabham BT11a Climax in which Graham finished 3rd - Hill won debuting the car in the NZ GP - sponsors pls.
I was not lucky enough to see a race meeting there but enjoyed poking about - hope to be there.

Has anyone asked Bob if he could bring his Mk2? I saw it on Ch31 a few weeks back, being driven around Calder by Bob.

I don't think there are HISTORIC DEVOTEES out there ,that look seriously at the costs of bringing cars out of museums for one off events . some of these devotees really do live in cloud coo-coo land. please let them realise their thoughts , but at there own expense ,not the expense of the owners of these nostalgic pieces of racing equipment............

Well thankfully......there are enough well heeled "owners of these nostalgic pieces of racing equipment" who do enjoy bringing them out for "one off events"......can I just ask....what is the point of having "nostalgic pieces of racing equipment" if you can't exercise them every now and then and show them off to an adoring public??

I love the story of the two brothers in the USA who race an Historically priceless Ferrari....in response to the question "But what if you damage it, isn't it irreplaceable?"...they just said "they were built to race and we love to race it, if something gets broke, hell we'll just fix it!" (or words to that effect).

It would be a dull world if nobody ever brought out old racing cars to show them off and let people experience the marvellous engineering of the time.

Time for me to leave......

What would be the point of going all out to get a car ready for Longford when the track is gone?

Genuine thought police stuff !!!

Many owners are happy to display their cars, others keep them for their own pleasure, some race them. Thank goodness we have people like the Bowden family that give us a chance to see cars many of us never saw race in anger, or Nereo Dizane & the BT12 Indy car, the F5000s, Jack Brabham & the BT19, Bob Jane & the Jag, the Camaro, the Brabham (where is the McLaren).

Cossy, I don't have the money, but there are those who do .... hope you don't own a good one.

It is all very well saying these cars are for the enjoyment of their owners & or siblings, old racing cars sitting around doing nothing for months on end doing nothing, deteriorate very quickly [ BRAKES , ANYTHING WITH OIL ON THE INSIDE, HYDRAULICS, ETC. ]. with our very litigeuos society, whom is going to pick up the damage a/c on humans that this will cause. The promoters, cams or what everelse are not going too. And do not tell me the owners are responsible people , not to let any thing happen, nobody can read into the future, every accident / incident has a cause, mostly human.

With a very large amount of luck and sense LONGFORD 2005 will never happen. By the way ,i have in my possesion a very original REPCO 35 MM colour film [2hrs duration] on LONGFORD . I slso have every REPCO 35 M M COLOUR FILM on the REPCO BRABHAM engine project from beginning to end of the project. I am an ex repco LTD employee ,before we were shafted in 1985 by corporate strippers.

If anyone was going to publish the full story, it would have been done by now, to be quite honest the interest is probably not there to bother. For your interest i am an ex employe of the RB operation from its inception to its closure.
