It's the eighties all over again, I feel.
HOWEVER If Ferrari only spend $40mil on F1, they've got plenty of money (and people) left to do Le Mans! |

A diesel powered Ferrari would be novel - could they bring themselves to create such a monster?

I'd say that's doubtful as they've already outlined their plans for future road cars a year or two ago. They are sticking with traditional engines, maybe flex fuel and with hybrid drive going to the transmission. I believe they have admitted to trying several different engine ideas but they are sticking with traditional engines for now. I think one of them was a dual crankshaft monster, and maybe even a turbo two stroke.

It's difficult to see Ferrari leaving F1 but the most prised cars in their history are prototype and GT sportscars like the 250 GTO, 250 LM, 330 P4, 512 S/M etc, the names of their F1 cars don't roll off the tongue so easily.
As for Toyota it's only a matter of time before they're back at Le Mans and in the WRC. |

Ferrari won't make a works P1, simple. Toyota might come back with that Dome...but they've wasted enough money on F1 right now.
Now can we stop speculating? |

I think Ferrari will design and maybe even build a car, just to let Mosley and Bernie think that they are serious about leaving F1. Then after the talks are over, they will badge it as a Maserati and race it under that brand with Vitaphone.

I think it would be great for sportscar racing if Ferrari do come and i think they are very serious about the possibility of leaving F1. All the hints so far have been at Le Mans.

Lets face if and its a big if Ferrari come to Le Mans with a full blown works effort others will follow. If the ACO in conjunction with the new teams design a suitable world series then the media and TV would follow and it would rapidly raise the profile of Sportscar to levels not seen since the '60's.
The World series would have to be partially TV friendly so it would need to have some shorter races. Format I guess would be more like ALMS |

It's looking evermore likely, it seems that the FIA and the teams have not been able to come to an agreement.

The reports I'm seeing is that it's not so much about the budget cap which can be negotiated. It's about the High handedness of the maFIA, with Max trying to make everyone Goose step to his tune.

When's the last time Ferrari entered a work's team? 70s?
All the Ferrari's we've had in Prototypes and GT1/2 over the years have been completely customer cars? |

So , whats the odds on a Ferrari LMP1 .... really ?
I heard that a Mr.Ferrari has reminded people that Ferrari history did begin with sportscars and Le mans ..... Luca himself is starting the Le mans race this year too ..... possibily renewed interest in a stomping ground that they should never have left in the first place . Love to see 4L V12 in a Ferrari LMP1 for next year . One thing is for sure , it wont be a diesel ..... god forbid !!! |

Hmm, it isn't that long since Ferrari build a fast Prototype!, Remember the 333Sp?.
The Fiat Group now got 4 brands which all some way or another is likely to be used in Prototype racing: Ferrari - For the reasons stated in this thread (leaving F1, and therefor needing a racing field) Maserati - A Classic racing brand, and used before to race in Sportscars (the MC12) Alfa Romeo - Talks was on a Alfa 8c Gt2 car, but never happened, but Prototype racing might be a great way to show case this brand further! Chrysler - Recently merged with Fiat, and needing to get some market shares, one way could be by racing Prototypes against Acura! (and remember they did attempt in the 00-02'ish!) Could they choose to build one basic design, and then use it with different brands?. Chrysler in the US, and then switching between the 3 others in the LMS (one for each year the car can race?).. But this might just be a crazy idea! |

I reckon we havent seen the proper engine regs yet ..... Im sure they will change their mind again .
Why rule out V10 and V12 ? ..... its a total bull rule . ANd If Ferrari come back and want to race a V12 ..... they will race a V12 . As Ferrari just pointed out with respect to F1 ..... Ferrari has a bigger name that F1 . |
