Yeah, F1 teams hire drivers just to screw them over in a mass conspiracy 'cause they don't care about winning and only exist to indulge thier evil desires.

J-C should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
I think the idea of the rule is so that Bridgestone don't have to take as many tyres to a race. Wet sessions are generally fairly rare, so most of the time the wets don't get used, hence the 1-set-per-car rule for Friday practice. Otherwise they end up taking hundreds of tyres more than are really required.

Presumably McLaren, Honda and Super Aguri used additional sets from the Saturday/Sunday allocation. Ultimately though the rule is there in black and white, it's been breached but probably will just result in a fine for the teams involved as it's just bad team management.

That sounds like a good precedent. Hamilton could easily deal with half a second no problem...

I've got a horrible horrible sinking feeling that he is going to be put back 10 places on the grid and then have alonso qualify on pole.

Arrrrrgh.

Just like after the Fuji incidents...

I think Lewis will get away with it because Bernie will shoot the stewards if they penalise him

Just heard Damon Hill on the Chris Evans show. He thinks he will be put to the back of the grid.

mad, it's only FREE testing.

LH didnt win any points at Shanghai, so i dont think there is any to worry.
I am quite sure it is in FIA interest to have LH as the WDC this weekend...

Yes, exactly if its only free testing when they aren't using race stuff, or anything in the race, even the engine. it doesn't help him at all. for qualifying I can see why. The FIA really are desperate to make this a climax. If he gets a grid drop it will be the most stupid rule ever.

Well it is a practice session, so it is useful.

However, whether it is worthy of a back of the grid start... I would venture to say it really isn't.

But then who will they actually have in 22nd place? Sato and Button will have to get the same penalty. At the worst it'll be a ten place drop for all three...

If they do impose a penalty I bet there is a backlash against them - not just because of penalising Hamilton, but because of all these rules and penaltys...

Have there been any grand prix this year when there hasn't been a penalty for some reason or other? I'm sure there have, and I am sure there are perfectly...good...reasons...but it just seems that there are penalties being applied all of the time! It is so sad for the sport and the fans.

It's not a good precedent. The qualifying system was much different. A half second could only be applied to his fast lap giving him at worst a guaranteed 10th starting position, unlike when it was applied against the aggregregate times back in '05.

I think the only realistic penalties applied have been 5 and 10 place drops and expect to see one of those if any penalty is warranted.

Agreed, it is a mighty blot on the championship. Not one decent decision has been made this year, everything is investigated.

It's Formula 1, Health & Safety Executive style.

Well I think that just proves that maybe teams have been "pushing" things too long. And now the FIA are getting smart and putting an end to it. Either that, or the teams are just now starting to push things too much. Either way, a rule is a rule, and the teams are breaking them left and right. Don't blame the FIA.

The FIA are not getting "smart" whatsoever, they are getting mind bendingly dumb.

Why such stupid rules are made is beyond me. Maybe they think everyone is impressed, I don't know.

This rule was made probably for the same reason just about every other rule has been made in F1, to cut costs. Now you know there are a few teams down the grid that would be quite unhappy if they removed a rule like that.

Damon said "back of the grid and with only three wheels". He was joking, and had only just heard it himself.

Hopefully the FIA will make up some new penalty quickly so we know.
