St. Pete May be Gone

According to an article in Sunday's Indy Star, the other Series will host an event in St. Pete this Thursday to announce that they will race there on April 3, 2005...

and the "unnamed" promoter that was working on the deal was Barry green.

I don't believe that St. Pete will host two races there...but I could be wrong....

It just seems unlikely....

so that venue seems to be off the list for 2005 for now, anyway....

Although I really enjoyed the St. Petersburg Grand Prix last year, this means I'll be free this winter to attend another race champ car race in the sun belt.

I think I read somewhere that they are opening the season in Argentina...

It'll be summer down there....

Does that qualify as "the Sun Belt?"

Very much doubt there will be a race there again with CART they firmly said they don't wish to race there again.

Exactly when did they say that????

I've always remembered OWRS as saying they wanted to return to St. Pete....

If they didn't want to return, it is news to me....unless of course it was Paul Gentilozzi commenting on it yesterday afternoon, after the news came out that the other Series will be racing there next April....

I didn't catch much of the live race because it clashed with the IRL but I definately heard I can't remember to be honest but It did definately happen.

Here is a quick clip from the Tampa Trib that I found in their online archive. The whole article costs $1.95, and I don't know if I like you folks that much

Grand Prix Of St. Pete Nears Return — With IRL
Published on August 18, 2004, Article 5 of 14 found.

afabrizio@tampatrib.com

TAMPA — The city of St. Petersburg, Indy Racing League and an unnamed promoter are close to an agreement that would revive the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, several sources said Tuesday.

A city official and an IRL spokesman would only say that no contract has been signed. Other sources said the deal is all but done and an announcement — in which a title sponsor may be named — should come within the next few weeks.

Kevin Dunn, (Tampa Tribune, The (FL), 447 words.)

You're a bit late with that Kevin. The deal for an IRL race next year appears to be done (the unnamed promoter is Barry Green, which many CART die-hards will see as a kick in the teeth - it certainly surprised me), with a CART race unlikely.

It's unfortunate for OWRS - the event was one of the ew things CART management got right in their last couple of years, but circumstances made it impossible to run the race this year, and with no set contract and a desire for a street race, Tony George intervened.

I lived in Tampa during the 1980s....

Buried somewhere in the "My Tracks" thread in the Armchair Enthusiasts Forum on 10-tenths is a street course that I created in downtown Tampa that includes portions of Davis Island, the downtown area, the Crosstown Expressway and Bayshore Blvd.

As a guy who knows the area, the course I drew up would be awesome and would have good, wide avenues to race on....

If you get the chance look it up via a search of my "posting history"
and see what you think of it....

Well, a race in Tampa would give me an opportunity to visit a former member of this forum...

I'm sure the IndyCar race will be very entertaining - it's a great track, and I'll be watching definitely.

Just as I'll be watching every Champ Car race too.

It's a shame some Champ Car fans can't enjoy both series.
In my view it's great I get to get the best of both worlds!
