i think you're right about audi's approach to qualifying. however, audi's target for this year is to get the same lap times as last year for their car (which was fastest of the race by a .5s margin at least, over the porsche), which they succeeded both in paul ricard and silverstone - actually, they slightly bettered their times on both occasions. spa was a different situation, mainly because of the tire choice. i think if the tires would have suited the temperature conditions, we would have seen times a lot closer to last year than we did. if audi manage to match last year's performance, they should already be down in the mid 3:17s at least, in race pace. which, to be honest, i'm not sure any of the other competitors is capable of. but that, of course, depends on whether audi managed to squeeze out enough of this year's cars' theoretical potential - which is not as hard as it seems, given the paul ricard/silverstone data.

I would be very surprised if the 2016 battery gives much lap time gain. It may be a little lighter and have slightly higher power density allowing for bigger % of the 8MJ recovery to come from the braking and less from the exhaust recovery (slightly more power from the ICE) and maybe slightly reduced cooling demands from the front brakes.

We do have to remember the 10MJ/7% power cut. Porsche might have gotten some of that back with their newer hybrid parts. How much that might cost in speed though isn't known. But the older system is a known quantity.

Wait... So the hybrid system must be working, otherwise the team must repair it? If so, that's simply ridiculous.

I don't think that's a rule. However, the hybrid systems are so integrated into the cars now that the car will break sooner or later if the hybrid doesn't work any more.

At the end of the morning session, dsc says the Porsche was slow. What was the issue, anyone?

There are some other pictures with the dive planes firmly intact. They were obviously trying different aero set-ups. The # 2 car ran a different aero set-up in the afternoon to the one they ran in the morning.

Some thoughts, predictions and notes on test day:
1. All teams have their own programs to follow so drawing too many direct conclusions is very dangerous. However, some of the data may be indicative. 2. Audi has a very fast car, and is likely to be the pole sitter. 3. I’m a little surprised at the pace of the Toyota’s (at least on test day), but they are as quick as or even slightly quicker than the Audi’s in S2. 4. Audi and Porsche are about even in S1 with perhaps a very, very slight advantage to Audi. 5. S3 is a repition of S1, again with a very, very slight advantage to Audi. 6. Based solely on the Test day data, the opening laps should see the Audi’s in front, chased by the Porsche’s and then the Toyotas’ not far behind. If the Porsche don’t have a good S1 in the opening laps, they may very well lose their positions to the Toyota’s in S2. The Audi’s will be safe on the opening laps. 7. Porsche were trying out different aero set-ups. 8. Once the race settles down, reliability will become the name of the game and then it will be anyone’s to win. Please accept my apologies that there is nothing too profound in these thoughts, but based solely on the available data, this is how I see things going on the big day. |

Porsche still remains the favourite, imho, but that's solely due to reliability as I think Audi will be faster. |

Yeah i think Toyota did not push quite as much as Audi or Porsche, and when everything is equal they will have an advantage in S2, but it won't be a big one. For me the gaps will be:
1.Porsche 2.Audi 0.3-0.5sec per lap behind 3.Toyota 1-1.5 sec per lap behind |

1s per lap behind only gives 2 laps behind per 24 hours. Quick 5 min pit stop repair for leading car could end with <4th place, it will be epic to watch.

The afternoon session for Audi #8 was unbelievably fast. I think they have the edge on pace....and not by a small margin.
