A1 Team South Africa support
Hi all
As South African's who love motorsport and seeing out country men competing at the top level Brands Hatch was a brilliant event to attend and support our country. Was at my 1st race meet ever and was so excited to see a South African team compete. So happy to see my national flag and support of Nelson Mandela (his prison number '46664' posted all around the circuit and on our team’s car.) I sat directly opposite our teams pit garage and they were so meticulous and professional. I felt really proud! Our car looked great and really stood out (NZ and GB cars as well ) The team, although working on the cars, gave up some of their time to chat to me during the pit walk and that was the highlight of my day. I then promised our driver, Stephen Simpson, that i'd be waving my flag at paddock hill bend every lap he took and duly did. He smiled and on both slow down laps after each race he remembered and acknowledged it with a thumbs up towards me. Brilliant!!!! I've been to two F1 events this year and that would never ever happen!!! The different nationalities and personalities really made it a world event. Met so many ppl from all over the globe and tons of South Africans (most of them queuing at the bar!) so happy to see a fellow citizen. In terms of emotion and socializing F1 and A1 are worlds apart! Good on ye A1!!! Racing was excellent (despite not that much overtaking) and a high quality of skill was on display. Team SA had an unfortunate incident on lap 1 with Jos Verstappen and lost 2 laps but fought back well, lapping just 2 tenths slower per lap than the awesome Piquet! Race 2 showed our real talent with Stephen coming from 25th to finish 6th! WOW! All in all a good day for our beloved SA and much much better things to come im sure. Keep the passion! |

I am glad your first experience of live motor racing was so positive and also glad your country did well. I watched the race on TV and wondered what the 46664 signs were around the circuit and guess that working for a SA bank I should have had some inclination.
As you enjoyed the experience so much, have you ever thought about becoming more involved in motorsport yourself by becoming a marshal? If you would like any further details drop me a PM. I hope you have many more years of watching or becoming involved in motorsport. Stephen. |

You lucky dog!! I would have loved to be there!
Kinda felt a touch of pride myself (even watching back home on tv), great seeing our nation doing good (second race was a treat). Here's to our first win (Tomas is racing next time) |

So nice to hear (or read) from u. Yeah it was awesome! Was so excited & proud to be there, dont think anyone could "out-wave" OUR FLAG on the day! Racing was fabulous and loud as hell !!! THOMAS, YES!!!! He is racing in Germany and without any problems in the sprint race, he should be very strong in the feature race. Keep watching! and enjoy the great weather back home! PS: R u planning to go watch the South African race in Durban? |

Hi Hein Yeah thats the correct date and its gonna be a street circuit! Think thats a first for us. I def recommand u go, cost me £35 entry (very good value for a whole days racing!), wonder how much it'll cost back home. I lived in Cape Town until August this year and <sigh> miss home and the great summer times already! 3 cheers for victory in Germany! |

I hope it does not cost too much... Knowing SA they always charge really "bah" prices
But here is another cheer for SA to do well in Germany!!! Also good to see a thread with all the SA flags!! Almost feels like home!! (I have a big SA flag as my curtain!!) |

You have something personal against Thomas? That's a bit harsh, don't you think? The driver is not the only one that can get a car's setup fixed, takes engineers and such also.
I was myself dissapointed, but will give them another go. |

mmmmm.....there's such a fine line between a peach of a setup and 1 that leaves u flondering. very difficult.
look at brazil, ud think they'd easily win both races again. I was there at Brands and could c Piquet was 2-3 tenths a lap faster than everyone! Thought it was his skill alone coz the cars are "equal" and France didnt do that well. but i Germany, France won both races coz their driver said he was "very happy with the setup". So equal cars, equally skilled top 10 drivers, different setups Maybe Thomas will do much better when A1 hits USA Thanks 4 ur views |
