Hope every one is ok, this the first I have read anywhere that a chassis was damaged.but these type of things happen in testing, all the major players in p1 have lost a chassis in testing in the last few years.audi had crashes at sebring with the r15 and r15+, Peugeot lost a 908 in testing when it got air born, and Toyota last year lost its first tub while testing.

It happens, just wonder what caused the fire.engine, electronics, or hybrid system? Anyone have an idea or guess of what hybrid system they will run?i don't remember reading it anywhere,is it going to be a battery, flywheel,or capacitor hybrid?

I believe that one of the recent Porsche videos contained clear evidence that the new Porsche would use batteries to store the energy harvested by the hybrid system. These are suspected to be lithium-ion batteries based on technology developed by A123 Systems, if I am not mistaken. The batteries "could" be one possible source of the alleged fire...

The alleged fire could also find its origin in the exhaust gas enerergy recovery system...

Or this was simply caused by an engine failure...

Speculation, speculation...

That's what I was going towards,a hybrid fire caused by lithium batteries or a turbo over temp caused by the exhaust recovery system.just what I'm speculation as making sense, but anything is possible.

Isn't the 2014 line-up also almost completed?

According to autozeitung.de, the internal name of the car is 9R9 (the GT1 from '98 was called 9R1 afair). There are rumours that the official name will be something like Porsche 919 (perhaps 919 R Hybrid or similar).

Btw. Can you tell me where this picture was taken? Looks quite new to me (protective grid on the air intakes, windows, hard to say if the sun visor is still black or silver etc..).

Welcome FML. Always nice to see new posters!

That looks like Paul Ricard. We've never seen any pictures from that test. Those protective intakes you've spotted look like a bit of a hack job to me.

I like that, the 919 R Hybrid, better than having to keep calling it 'Porsche's new LMP1'

Sam Collins referred to it as the 919 around a month ago.

So, is this enough confirmation that we can now begin to refer to it as the 919?

At least it wouldn't be entirely surprising, the name '919' was registered by Porsche in autumn 2012.

No news, but now confirmed by Alexander Hitzinger (head of LMP1 development at Porsche): the car has batteries and uses two separate energy recovery sytems. He describes the electrical machine at the front wheels as a "Traktionsmaschine" which literally translates into "traction machine"... I'm not quite sure what he meant by this, but as you already know, AWD will be allowed at any speed in 2014, so perhaps it's mainly for acceleration after slow passages.
Furthermore, there is the exhaust-gas recovery. He didn't say what the recovered energy will be used for (e.g. it could go to the wheels or to the turbo at low revs).

What was new to me is that the engine is a V4 with 2l of displacement. At least that is what they use at the test bench.

edit: this is what Auto Zeitung 26/2013 says

Batteries could work for a lower powered hybrid system just for the front. They wont have to be very big in size or weight to deliver a good punch. If they aim for 4mj option they will meet that target imo. I think 2mj is just too little for LeMans.

Well, if they did burn a car as rumored, they could be really working with some hot juice. These high-tech lithium ion batteries are getting a reputation after Boeing's, Porsche's and Tesla's recent episodes.

When LiPo batteries and brushless motors really started to come on in the r/c plane world many people lost garages and homes while charging the LiPo batteries. This was around 2003,4,5. Things have come along way but there are still risks involved with abusing lithium polymer batteries. All it takes is for one cell to fall out of balance.

So basically Porsche guys combined the battery KERS in F1 and the new F1 ERS together next year.
