Another great performance from Webber to go quickest in the first session at Monaco.

Let's see in first qualifying how much of those performances from Webber and Button was down to fuel load. The Renaults' pace is no surprise though.

Only testing, but encouraging all the same.

Button P2, Villeneuve P12. Sorry, couldn't resist.

Schumacher did more laps in this session than both Renaults put together. Are Renault saving tyres?

The Renaults looked the most promising though.
They were constantly the quickest and Trulli spent the first half of the session in the pits.

I'm sure you couldn't, but I'm equally sure you're aware that they are most probably running different fuel loads. Villeneuve finished a very credible 4th here two years ago, while Button has never scored points here. Admittedly, Monaco was not a good track for Jacques in the beginning of his F1 career, but for the past four years, he has beaten his various teammates substantially here.

Others could say "Coulthard 3rd, Raikkonen 9th" or "Montoya 8th, Ralf 15th", but those statements are pointless unless you know how they were running, whether there were any problems, etc.

The point about Renault saving tyres is interesting. I expect them to run light and 3 stop, in the hope of breaking away early on, or at the least getting some more great publicity, and this is consistant with that. However, do the tyres used in the open tests count towards the race weekend total?

Well done Webber and Button, that'd be an interesting front row if they are using those fuel loads in qualifying.

No argument there. TGF could be sandbagging, but the quickest way to the finish is still the quickest way to the finish. Qualifying a relatively slow car on the front row and having to pit after 10 laps isn't going to win you the race.

R - I did in fact start my post with the words "only testing". I'm sure, as always, we can expect a great battle from JV.

Saving tyres didn't make sense, now Boots mentions it, because the allocation hasn't started yet and they are still evaluating.

I STILL can't quite believe how good webber is going(i'm an aussie). He looks every bit as good as shuey did in his early career.I dare not be to hopefull just yet.....

Good point about the renaults.Maybe they think they can pass others with their great brakes/early corner speed-so go more stops and fight for TV coverage by passing for the lead(?!)....ok maybe not

I thought he was going around with the pit lane speed limiter left on.

Really great work from Webber. A good, stable driver who knows how to work and get things happening. Long may it continue.

TGF or Kimi for pole though.

Mark 9th in 1st qual

Hopefully TGF will stick it in the wall in qualifying & have to start from P20 & make his way through.

Now that would be good to watch!

We need a little TGF icon....
