They certainly could commission a Coupe, but HVM tweeted last week (or this week) that they will service "Lola cars" at their race shop. It was retweeted by @almsnotes, so presumably that includes Lola P1 and P2 cars. Furthermore, in the IMSA GTP days whole 962 cars were built by the likes of Fabcar here in the U.S. and many teams had cottage industry builders build replacement and development parts for their cars. So as Rob Dyson hinted, they could very well develop the car on their own and appear confident in being able to run the "B12/66" for as long as they see fit.

One has to wonder with the removal of the Mazda cam covers if Dyson will switch engines for 2013. I don't think it would be worth the expense and bother, quite frankly. (Unless of course an OEM came to them with money.)

Also, reading the Gordon Kirby article and listening to Dyson and Pickett talk, they seem to be pretty big supporters of the P1 class over even the P2 class.

Though the privateer P1 seems to be on the verge of extinction right now because of uncertainty over the balance of the ACO's new rules (and their desire to make P1 entirely factory-reliant), and Lola's difficulties, circumstances can change very quickly.

And personally, I would really struggle to support a series that marketed itself as anything but that. The continent of North America has in the past, and still can support top tier professional sports car racing. A ladder series for a championship that maybe visits once or twice a year (and burgles strong assets) is not what IMSA's top championship should be.

As ELMS collapses, in turn we have some neat PLM news:

The latest development comes as a major boost to the race, which was not picked up as a round of the FIA World Endurance Championship for 2012 after a two-year stint as a joint Intercontinental Le Mans Cup/ALMS race.

The Petit Le Mans will serve as a double points-scoring round for the ELMS, which will still award auto-invites to the 2013 Le Mans 24 Hours for its class champions.

As they will offer financial assistance for ELMS teams and there are LM auto invites at stake in both in ELMS champ, ALMS champ as well for individual PLM class winners as well, we might see a really great turn up!

Really happy now.

Wow - that's certainly added a much needed (and, categorically targeted) boost to the grid.
Seems the best possible outcome, given the circumstances.

Edit: Guess we'll have to wait and see which teams take up the invite.

me too, both championships might be struggling, but in a world where we have the likes of the WEC striving to kill the regionals, it's good to see a bit of co-operation and surely a very strong grid out of it for a fine PLM that much deserves it.

I'm starting to wish they had left Bahrain WEC at the same time as PLM just so they could compare the interest in the two.

I doubt the 53 will be an issue, absolute max from Europe is likely to be 11 and I doubt it'll reach that. Can you see ALMS getting 40+ ?

back in early 2000s before the 2004 version of the LMS there were several European teams running a full ALMS calendar.

Considering that LMP2 has been the ELMS' one saving grace this year and a primary deficiency in the ALMS, suddenly Petit Le Mans just became a whole lot more competitive considering the quality of those European teams...now let's hope they make it over here!

Sounds good in theory, but it remains to be seen whether ELMS teams want to afford a full season in the US. On the other hand, if the ACO wants a true second-tier endurance championship, they might resurrect the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup, that consists of some American and European races. On the other hand, "thou shall not have another intercontinental sportscar series besides the WEC."

But it's pretty nice that the ACO supports the ALMS by inviting ELMS teams to Petit Le Mans. Even if there will be only a handful P1 entrants, P2 should put on a great show.

Don´t expect more than 8-9 cars from Europe, but it will make a great PLM (lots of nice LMP2 probably fighting for a podium or maybe the race win if the lmp1 has problems)

It all depends how many GTC and LMPC teams show up and whether or not LV5 makes it to the end of the year, other than the Viper no new ALMS entries are expected by Petit in any of the LMP1/LMP2/GT classes, however it is expected that the Fernandez Aston will show up at Petit if the hardware money is in place.

Most of the ELMS teams that take up the invite will probably not be doing WEC as Petit is smack in the middle of the two Asian rounds. Travel costs are all well and good but as we saw in Brazil in 2007 it doesn't always mean teams will show up. John and others since the start of the year have said Audi/Toyota wont do PLM and this really changes nothing for them.

Good news for the overall series, in an interview Dagys had with Scott Atherton the latter said that some ELMS teams are in negotiations to run at Baltimore and/or VIR. The late-season could be really strong due to this!

Not sure what advantages there are in running at Baltimore & Virginia for those European teams (apart from, you know getting race mileage ACO stole from them) but whatever, sounds great. Looks as the ELMS breakup was the best thing that could've happened!! Love it

Ive an idea , why dont all the European teams just go and race in the ALMS .....

Forget about us Europeans and sponsorship commitments altogether . When will the ALMS come and race in Europe . Hard enough to get a few of them to do Le Mans , even when they win auto invites !!!

Im getting sick of this ALMS , ELMS & AsLMS deal ..... balls to the lot of them .

You want to go sportscar racing , well pull your finger out and go WEC , end of .
