Mark Patterson will drive the #20 Dyson at VIR then the #16 at PLM. I've never heard of him before, how good is he?

From Wikipedia: "Mark Patterson is a South African born private equity and hedge fund businessman of caucasian descent, notable for co-founding the private equity firm MatlinPatterson Global Advisors.
Along with David Matlin, they make up the private equity firm MatlinPatterson Global Advisors."

So he's not very good.

He drove for Michael Shank in Grand Am for a long time... won one or two DP races, actually. Decent enough for a gentleman driver, I think.

And he drove a few times for United Autosports as far as I'm aware. (Including Petit Le Mans last year in a P2 car)

I wonder if he was one of the people the team thought could help them get the second car to Le Mans this year?

Isnt he a co-owner (or at least heavily involved) in United Autosports? Zak Brown being the other. I seem to hear UA and Patterson in the same a breath a lot.

No, just a paying driver. Richard Dean I believe is the other co-owner.

And the search for his replacement goes on... Hopefully. Although you don't just luck into a James Weaver all too often.

Another name I hear often in conjunction with UA. So its Dean and Brown who are the owners. Thanks for clearing that up.

Wow. Was anyone else expecting this news? Strikes me as a bit of a risk to bring this in at crunch time in the championship. But all the best to them and Flybrid in making this work.

I hope this has bigger meaning to the team in the future. If ALMS/GA drops P1- they'd be good to get their hybrid program running to join WEC and/or LeMans.

Dyson himself does ..... big sales from porta-crappers for a start .

If he wants to stay in P1 , he has no choice .

It's also an unknown if GA/ALMS will accept hybrids in 2014. If not, it would be an almost wasted project.

Dyson is going P1/hybrid , for what reason ?

There is little point in doing this for the remaining few ALMS races .

My take would be that Mazda will fork out for a WEC P1 Dyson/hybrid 2013 season .

Dyson, for whatever reasons, does not really seem to be interested in racing outside of N.America. He has had ample opportunity to do so, and passed. I would think they will end up in the top class of the new merged series, they have raced DPs before.
They could very well just be serving as a test bed for Mazda in the prototype class, but it is also rumored that Mazda is coming with a GX class hybrid for the new series and they could very well be proving out the tech in advance of that.

AIUI the flybrid is pretty much plug-and-play by now... and Dyson really need to do something to close the gap to the HPD, so I wouldn't read too much into this for now.

I also think this is just Dyson's attempt to be more competitive vs the HPD. They can also run this setup next year in the ALMS. Maybe there is a desire to be the last LMP1 champion in ALMS history?
