Mk2 Granada 2.3l, enought shire horses to tug a trailer full of band gear and PA without holding traffic up on the hills.
Vincent Hurricane 1500cc Spitfire engine with twin SU's, KN fliters and a fast road camshaft of some kind (I think it's Kent)enough race horses (!) for a bit of fun, can outrun a GTi with a bit of work from the driver and the right petrol!! (Sorry, I don't do numbers!) Last edited by Bluebottle; 30 Oct 2002 at 20:47. |

Current: Mercedes E320, I think the spec says 229bhp, but it's done 107k miles now so probably more like 210. Kickdown used to be impressive til the gearbox started screwing up...
Most: UK spec Subaru Impreza Turbo (Terzo no. 265), ITG air filter, Scoobysport rear silencer/3.5" pipe. Never dyno'd, but approx. 240-250bhp, 1/4 mile around 13.5 sec. Wasn't the quickest in the SIDC, but was one of the best soundtracks... Next: Who knows? But I need something capable of organ redistribution... One of the few cars I've been in for a proper blast that really felt much quicker than the Scooby is my mate's 911 - 993 C2, full GT2 kit, NA RS engine mods (bored from 3.6 to 3.8, modded cams etc, full sports exhaust - definitely NOT road legal!)... Was dyno'd at a smidge over 400bhp. Basically as quick as a 993 Turbo in a rear-drive narrow bodied C2! |

It's not my everyday car now , but it was up til 13 months ago : 1995 Mustang GT , built up 5.0 , supercharged/inter-cooled , dyno'd at 357 RWHP , 380 RWTQ . That about 410 hp/440 lb/tq at the flywheel . It was bought new (with 215 hp) , and now has 184,000 kms on the clock .
Best 1/4 mile time : a traction-limited 13.3/107.1 MPH at the local track , which is 3600 ft above sea level. Alan Last edited by fast95pony; 5 Nov 2002 at 19:45. |

Boy this is a shame isn't it? I've only got 105 horses. But hang on - the Ducati only weighs 205 kgs.
Say, power to weight - I think I win baby! |

If only it ran, I'd be able to say "'67 Olds Cutlass 442, factory rated 375hp, _at least_ that much at the rear wheels in the real world."
Curse my father for leaving it in the driveway to disintegrate. The paint's a mess, the trim and bumpers need to be re-chromed, the pistons are welded to the cylinder bores with rust, I think the carb is beyond saving... And that's not saying anything about the interior, which reeks of mouse urine. Last edited by Lee Janotta; 27 Nov 2002 at 02:42. |

I have got 115bhp from my standard Peugeot 205 1.6GTI. And about 80bhp from my standard Vauxhall Nova 1.4sr.
I am going to get either a 1.9GTi 205 (130bhp) or ideally a 206 GTi-6 (155bhp). Depends how much money I can stump up. |

I have a 2002 [censored] M3, 333 hp in US spec (in Europe it has an extra 5 hp due to slightly less stringent emissions requirements). Its build date is late October of last year -- from the three-month period of bad engines from the plant in Germany. With many of these engines the main bearings wear out at between 5,000 and 7,000 miles. I have 6000 on mine right now. Some of the bad engines start pinging and clanging before expiring; others just throw a rod through the block and dump oil on the road.
I now keep the stereo low or off, and keep an ear open for signs of trouble, but I don't baby the car. Might as well enjoy that horsepower while it lasts. |

So much for "superior" German engineering and workmanship. Good luck.

It doesn't really upset me that the Germans screwed up -- it can happen to anyone, and I still think the M3 is the best all-around car on the road at anywhere near its price. What angers me and other M3 owners is the stupid game BMW is playing with PR. They won't admit there's a problem (they're looking into it) and for months they blamed owners for supposedly abusing the engines. They are now replacing all blown engines quickly and for the most part without acrimony, but it took a long time for them to come around, and they still haven't offered an extended warranty, which to me is a no-brainer. In practice they're going to have to cover this engine for beyond the 50,000 mile warranty, otherwise they'll end up on the losing end of a lawsuit.
The issue was finally publicized in Autoweek just this week -- alongside a similar story about the Ford Taurus SHO and its Yamaha-made engine. The Americans and the Japanese are very capable doing just as badly as the Germans. Thanks for the good wishes! |
