Get a 620Ti, you won't regret it. Looks like a standard 600 but with 200bhp.
Lots of fun. |

They're actually extremely nice cars, and a fraction of the price of the equivalent Honda Accord (which shares more parts with it than you'd think).
And if performance isn't your thing, then a journey will always be soothed by a bit of wood and leather to coddle you. But the best thing is because Rovers are seen as somehow untrendy, the prices are absolutely on the floor at the moment. |

yea I was suprised at the spec for the price.
I was looking at the turbo diesel which seems to have good fuel economy and not bad performance compared to other TDs. They seem quite a luxurious car, with leather etc. |

...but children will point and laugh at you in the street. Or worse still, they WON'T. You'll just pass straight by as if nothing happened. You were merely an unidentifyable breeze. A faint engine noise. A "did you notice that car??" "Nope".
Kinda the automotive equivalent of porridge. Gruel with class. Put it like this: do you NEED the space?? Or would buying a smaller car get you something more... pzazz?? Schabang?? Kabloozah?? |

I was going to buy a Rover 400 (it's now changed to a Fiesta, to a Escort, to a Volvo 460, to a Volvo 440, back to a Fiesta), but I kept hearing horror stories about the K-Series engine. Every one I phoned about had had problems, ie new head gaskets etc.
Everyone I spoke to on MG Rover enthusiast sites had nothing but praise for the car, but all of them had had engine problems! All this rant has nowt to do with a 600, as it'd be a diesel you'd be getting. |

dont do it, the rover 600 is awfull it is was one of the least desirable of all the rovers ever, my dad had one and it was useless, mind you it was reliable, but at the end of the day it is a honda accord with a different nose job.
both honda and rover have a reputation of being for the older generation, the flatcap and slippers brigade. surely you are not ready for that, is anyone. |

But the only way the image will change is if a few brave younger people start buying them!

Sounds like you need two cars Woodyracing, keep the Fiasco for fun and get a load-lugger for, er, lugging loads. Then, of course, you're into two road taxes, two insurances, two mot's....

two nightmares too, nah i'll stick to one car.
I dont really care about the image as its going to be a tow car. Reliable and economical and low(ish) running costs are my priorities. Im goin to miss my little festa tho. |

Imagine a Honda without a VTEC. The ONE REDEEMING FEATURE is The VTEC. Now imagine that gone.
NOW. Imagine a tacky grille stuck under the front. Imagine a beige interior. Imagine, if you will, a Honda with a softer ride. Imagine a car with a WORSE image. Imagine a car with a pittiful resale value. Imagine a bifocal windscreen. Imagine a glovebox. For keeping gloves in. For driving. Imagine. The Rover 600. (aren't we (I) cruel?? Cheer up Mr Woody!! ) |

Looks like a nice motor Woody given your requirements. You can hardly tow a racecar on a hot hatch, can you? (Yes, Tristan, if you're out to impress I'd suggest towing a racecar will do that more than driving round with bass booming out of your rodded Nova...)

I think someone has been listening to Mr Clarkson a tad too much....
Looks like you've made a good choice Woodman, does anyone out there know how good they are for towing? |

The 600 is the one Rover I have never driven, so I can't comment on what they are like as a daily drive. But I know the turbo diesel from other Rovers, and believe me it's good. Everyone at the time praised the equivalent Peugeot/Citroen engine, but the Rover is MUCH better - quieter, smoother and plenty of grunt for overtaking. I was unfortunate enough to own a Peugeot 306 DTurbo, and that was complete arse curtains. Sold it after 2 weeks. Never, ever, believe what you read in Autocar. And by the way, the K series does not eat head gaskets. I've had two cars with this engine and they have been completely reliable.

My father had a MG Montego for 14 years and had no engine problems. That car towed my rally cars hundreds of miles and his caravan thousands of miles. I can't speak for later rovers but the O series was a fantastically torquey engine and a brilliant tow car.
If you want the teenagers to be impressed buy an Imprenza Sport Special in custard yellow. I know I am driving around in one now since my Alpina is off the road. I am actually glad considering the snow. I ended up towing a transit with the Impreza. Nae bother at a... |
