Have Porsche ever tested their 919 under "extreme" heat? Just curious to know if very high temperatures would be a concern for Le Mans, especially this year when all three factory teams use batteries.

Porsche have tested in Bahrain ....during the winter. I am sure that "extreme" heat would have a negative impact, but I think that the risk of having those temperatures in Northern France in June with El Nino now collapsed and El Nina beginning to bloom is a slim one.

All 3 teams have liquid cooled batteries, but different concepts and cooling liquids.

Porsche is in no hurry to replace Alex Hitzinger who left recently. His replacement will probably not be known until after Le Mans and will then start on the 2018 car.

GasperG has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
I didn't know things have come far enough that Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) is mentioned in F1 and surprise, surprise in combination with MAHLE:
http://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/an...le-690156/?s=1
http://www.f1technical.net/news/20316

More older technical info:
http://www.greencarcongress.com/2010...-20101027.html
http://www.greencarcongress.com/2011...-20110414.html

Is there a possibility that Porsche is using similar tricks? Are they allowed under current regulations? How could this be regulated if this is not allowed?

I saw that in the F1 forum and I can't imagine it is not happening in LMP1. My comment over in that forum was that the pre charge insert (or whatever they call the part that has the special injector and spark plug) appears to be easily tweaked without having to redo cylinder head design. Given there is more flexibility in WEC to do development, I can imagine its an area in which ongoing development would be easier to do once you get a working system in place.

From Hartley's twitter post, I get that the LDF package will only be used for Le Mans. I could be wrong.

If you're in the mood for a porsche worship story and feel like revisiting Bahrain 2015 and the #17 issues with a grain of heroism and whatnot, read the MST (ger) article about pliers & ductape carrying Porsche to the title

For Spa it'll be interim between HDF and the LDF LM spec, so yes full LDF only for LM

Which is the reasonable thing to do as Spa has many fast corners. Toyota will basically do the same as their "HD" car isn't that HD but rather a more medium spec package

But I bet this LM aero elements will be almost invisible to our eyes, ie, very subtle changes to the 919 that raced on Silverstone.

I wonder if the ACO will count the Porsche hybrid LM/sprint aero as a separate kit or an upgrade of an existing body kit.

I'd like to know definitively what is and isn't allowed with the 3/2 body kit rules. I know that upgrades and tweaks are allowed, but where do upgrades/tweaks end and a whole standalone kit beings?

I really want to understand how the bodywork homologation limits work. After looking at the sporting and technical regulations, I think the only mention is in it the technical regulations. They highlight the new stuff and it seem the key one is in Appendix H, Article 1.11 which says…

Quote:
The definition of bodyworks, subject to limitation of their amount per season, will be specifically homologated.
That is pretty vague. It doesn’t say what the limits are on numbers, etc. But that part really focuses on the limited amount of homologations per season. So then the question is, with respect to the bodywork, what is homologated? So back to the technical regulations and Article 3.1 Dimensions

Quote:
Except what is permitted by Article 3.6 below, inside and outside measurements (length, width, overhangs, wheelbase, windscreen, windows, etc.) and the general shape of the bodywork elements must be maintained as in the Homologation Form.
So that raises two questions. First, what exactly is to be listed on the homologation form? I can’t find a copy and I expect that would answer a lot of questions. Second, what is permitted in article 3.6 that would appear to exclude it from homologation? Article 3.6 is quite large and covers aerodynamic devices. The word "homologate" (or variations of) rarely appear in this section. So maybe many of the small details (dive planes, etc.) are not included in the homologation, but larger things such as general shape of things like the front/rear body and side pods are? And I believe the car is homologated as a whole, so you can’t mix and match things such as front from one homologation form, with rear from another homologation form.

My best guess is that the regulation above that says "general shape of the bodywork elements must be maintained" is the real key. That is VERY vague, but I guess to a degree it’s up to the scrutineers to determine if a car that is presented matches the "general shape" of one of the existing homologated bodyworks (I assume the scrutineers would have copies of the homologation forms). And of course, other teams can protest if they feel something is not correct.

Thanks for doing some digging on that, I was also wondering how that rule was being enforced. Mixing and matching different homologated pieces was what I thought they were going to go with but who knows.
