BAR lose appeal on torque transfer system

To add to BAR's current woe, they will not be able to use their torque transfer system in Hungary, having lost their appeal. From Autosport.com

The FIA statement read: "The appeal concerned an 'electro hydraulic software controlled device which connects the front wheels via drive shafts and allows controlled torque transfer from a faster wheel to a slower wheel even under braking' on the T-car of the team.

"Having heard the explanations of both parties and having examined the various documents and other evidence, the Court upheld the decision of the Panel of the Stewards."

A Takuma win would really cure it.

The system always seemed likely to be thrown out, and it was careless of the team not to check it out properly before building it.

When will anything not be outlawed in F1?

We've had so much banned in recent years, that it's pointless to even bother innovating!

McLarens trick braking system
CVT
Michelin tyres
Blah, blah, blah.....

Didn't Benetton run this system in 1999? Because it wasn't banned then was it?

Oh, silly me, that's because they weren't running near the front.

Benetton's system was mostly mechanical, this had electronic gubbins.

The Benetton system used a front differential, whereas the BAR system apparently uses a small clutch to control the braking distribution between the two fron wheels.

Same idea though, and I think its pretty darn cool.

I think these small innovations are great. Maybe they can't use this particular technology in F1, maybe it will find its way into road cars or into something completly different.

I like the innovations we see in f1 cars nowadays, and facinated with the way teams go about overcoming problems or improve the cars.

But if the innovation's out of the book, then it should rightly stay out of the car.

Wrex, I doubt I'd have a problem if it was on a Ferrari....I have nothing against innovation.

And anyways, despite my hatred for Ferrari ( ) I admire their technical team and the cars they come up with.

Can anyone think of anything that hasn't been banned at all in recent years?

I'm trying to think of the system McLaren were developing that was banned a few years ago. Time to dig out the old magazines methinks.....

Are you thinking of McLaren/Mercedes and the beryllium cylinders? Or something to do with the drivetrain?

Williams got their cariable transmission sacked before it ever hit a F1 race. Did do a few tests though.....

It was to do with the drivetrain. I can't believe I can't remember what it was, I was thinking it over just the other day!

It stored up energy under braking and used it to boost power.

Cariable = Variable.

But a transmission that could be carried would be cool.....
