im amazed at the amount of damage to the helmet, having read a recent article in f1 racing on the stringent tests they have to go through, in these tests if the outer layer was penetrated after impact tests with sharp implements dropped from a great height it was a failure, i guess the rules arent the same for all series?

Surely the damage to the helmet is a good thing - shows it absorbs the impact

Was the driver wearing the HANS device as this would of restricted the movement of the head and the driver could of sustained more damage as a result.

Surely the helmet is not ment to deform like that? I wonder if the helmet has had a possible bang before and the fracture or damage had not been detected and therefore had been slightly weaker.
I remember when Karting we were once shown, in drivers briefing, a helmet that had been in an accident. On the outside it looked fine but whoever had donated it had cut it in half and stripped out the padding. The inside was all discoloured at the area of impact and was cracked but the outside looked fine! |

I just think that a helmet that doesn't do that when it has the weight of a car thud on it would transfer too much shock to the driver's head.

We don't know how the internal layers have deformed anyway but I would think the deformation would be progressive as the driver wasn't injured too severely. |

That's true in a normal crash impact - but when you have a car land on your head, it's inevitably going to deform!

Taking it all a step further, Why do cars now have crumple zones to absorb shock rather than the old designs of solid boxes that remained intact and caused more injury to the occupants inside? |
