Alex E should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Spa Classic Touring cars

I received an entry form from Peter Auto for the Spa Classic May 24-26 in which there are races for U2TC and later Group 1 & 2 cars. There are two one hour races for each Group, one day & one night race.

Alex, any idea on tyres for later cars? I have no experience of racing with Peter Autos, do they accept cars without period race history?

Price not out of the ball park for 3 practices and 2 hours racing at Spa.....

Hi everyone,

as I am now working for Peter Auto, if you have any questions concerning the Spa Classic event and the Touring Car races, I am here to answer them.

You can send me a PM or an email directly to the following adress : lquiniou@peter.fr

Concerning the cars and regulations, we will accept all touring cars providing they comply with their FIA homologation form.

We will have two grids :

- The first one for under 2000cc pre 66 Touring Cars.
- The second one for pre 85 Group 1 and Group 2 (Over 2000cc pre 66 will race in this grid).

For the tyres, we will run threaded tyres only such as :

- Pre 66 : Tyres with treaded pattern all over width - e.g.: Avon CR6ZZ, Dunlop Historic and such.
- Pre 85 : Tyres with treaded pattern all over width - e.g.: Avon "Historic All Weather", Avon CR6ZZ, Dunlop post historic (compound 204) and such.

Rain tyres or tyres with modern patterns (post 1984) are forbidden.

The full regulations will be online mid January. Any questions, just ask !

Thanks Louis. You have answered the question I asked. Treaded tyres only, so I wont be able to enter as my eligible car runs on slicks.

Meeting on Brands GP same weekend so not too disappointed......

Regards, Mike

Shame about the tyre thing....

It kind of rules out a lot of group 2 cars running in the masters an motor racing legends series.

I don't know what is period correct for 70's . . . but if Peter Auto wants FiA cars then it'll be FiA tyres, the CTCRC run those tyres, as do the HSCC? I know roadsports don't, but they're special!

Tyres

Very dissapointed about the tyre rule. It basically rules out every CSL, Capri, Camaro, Jaguar, 635, etc....

I have no vested interest as I don't have a suitable car but am I missing something - surely if the cars ran in period on slicks and are running to homologated spec then shouldn't that what they run on now? If not then what really is the point of this FIA stuff?

Tyres

The biggest problem being that nearly all of the big class cars from 1973 on we using 16" diameter wheels to accomodate bigger brakes.
So far as I am aware these treaded tyres are not available in 16" & are half the width of the original slicks anyway. Maybe OK for Escorts, 2002`s, Golf etc....

Not OK either for 1974 Escorts running period correct 15" wheels! If can get width diameter is wrong..... That's why some run 13" and smaller brakes to give them more choice.

Homologation papers don't cover tyres, just homologated wheel widths and diameters, brakes, etc. The relevant App J for the period provides allowable mods.

Depending on the period, Group 2 was highly modified with larger diameter wheels, bigger brakes etc. From around 1970 the tyres were slicks.

Joe, the CTCRC tyres are free although most run Toyos.

Have emails Louis, and Peter, and consulted my Co driver . . . The management has approved the proposal, I just hope some of the Dutch Cortina GT lads come out as well, give me someone to race with.

Thanks for the link Louis. The sizes are correct for my application and I have spoken to BMTR who supply in UK and they confirm OK to fit on touring cars.

So it all boils down to whether people want to fork out for another set of tyres that may only get used one weekend, and also whether the event at Brands Hatch same weekend where Masters and JD Classics Challenge are racing on slicks is an attractive enough and cheaper alternative!

BTW, noise level comes into the mix as well. Any idea what limit will be at Spa for touring cars?

I have always wanted to race my Gp2 car at Spa, but will need to make a decision on cost. Will let you know!

Well, from a noise point of view (FIA control) :

- Maximum noise 103 dB(a) + 4 dB(A) at 4500 RPM

The price - 1800 € - for :

- 1 place for the car in a garage
- Race numbers
- 40 min' of untimed practice (day)
- 30 min' of night qualifying
- 40 min' of day qualifying
- 60 min' day race
- 60 min' night race
- Drivers Club and passes for 2
- 2 Non Drivers Club passes
- 2 parkings

That's a very good package considering the circuit and track time (110' min of practice and 2 hours of racing (1 or 2 drivers)).

And racing in between Friday and Saturday night so you can go home

I get the VFM, Louis. I'm sold on that! Trouble is tyres will be about the same. Not sure how the noise limit needs to be interpreted, but I run a silencer and have option of a second if needed. Alex is the one that likes to be LOUD.....
