...V8's at the AGP in 07 unlikely...

http://www.couriermail.news.com.au/s...-10389,00.html

Quote:
V8 Supercars are at a roadblock over the question of whether they will be back on the Australian Formula One grand prix undercard next year.

After the contract to run non-championship support races at the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne expired earlier this month, talks between Gold Coast-based V8 Supercars Australia and the Australian GP Corporation have ceased.
Quote:
Why has this happened? According to the sport's decision makers, the sticking point is the grand prix date for next year. Also, there are more urgent matters on the table, such as the domestic broadcast rights, which are up for renewal this year.

There is no specific deadline for a decision on whether incumbent rights holder Channel 10 will retain the contract or it will go to another network.
Quote:
Cochrane expects that the stalemate should be sorted out by next month.

"Until a few things are certain our decision on the AGP will stay up in the air," he said.

well, well, there are a few interesting points there, firstly the F1 thing and then the TV deal, could be a watershed year next year.

I don't think Bernie Ecclestone will lose any sleep over this. The Porsche Cup will fill that spot nicely with a lot less angst, imho.

It will also answer the question a lot of people wonder about-how many people less would attend Albert Park if V8 Supercars were off the bill?

I agree storyline. F1 is big enough on it's own to make it, and the Porche race would add some Euro style look about our round. This isn't the Gold Coast where we have some real dodgy drivers running around in a series that has struggled to survive for a little while now

F1
GP2
Carrera Cup
Utes
Celebrity Challenge
And some other Euro Flavour.

It doesn't bother me about the V8's possibly not attending AGP, but it would be nice to see a major international category take its place.

Remember when they would 'import' a category for the AGP, like the Ferrari Challenge Series, Porsche Supercup, Lamborghini Supertrophy etc etc....

The AGP probably wouldn't miss the V8's, but the V8's (in terms of the sponsors) would likely miss the AGP very much...

....and it would be the first time since 1982 that touring cars hadn't had a support race at the AGP (that year the AGP clashed with the AEC round at Surfers Paradise)

TSR has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Did not the SUPER TOURES run at Albert Park about 10 years ago, and did not Brockie make his debut in a ST in a Volvo at the GP.

So the V8 have missed the GP before and were not missed.

It would be a shame if they dont support the AGP, mainly from a fans perspective its probably the only event (besides perhaps the Gold Coast and Darwin) where the teams and drivers are very approachable and the whole circus or octagon is accesible to the general public... You can literally touch the cars unlike an event like the Clipsal where punters pay upwards of $25 for a paddock pass where the vehicles are atleast ten metres from view....

In terms of moving foward, I hope they do, Bernies never particularly shown any real interest in the series. I think an additional championship round would be the way to go, and perhaps the Fujitsu series could fill that void as I believe the competition, entertainment and spectacle is now on par with the "Divison one category"...

Could this be the 07' calendar? Early days I know...

R1 Adelaide.
R2 Pukekohe.
R3 Winton.
R4 QR.
R5 Hidden Valley.
R6 Barbagallo.
R7 Oran Park.
R8 Townsville.
R9 Sandown.
R10 Bathurst.
R11 Surfers Paradise.
R12 Symmons Plains.
R13 Sakhir.
R14 Phillip Island.

Why bother going back to a place that doesn't appreciate your show?

Aside from $$$ and ego boost...

If that's the criteria, it could be a VERY short championship calendar

Super Tourers and the V8s both competed at the AGP as support races in 1995 (Adelaide), 1996 (Albert Pak), 1997 and 1998. For 1999 the Super Tourers were dropped.

Brock competed in both V8s and Super Tourers at the AGP in 1996.

I think what many people fail to understand is that many people and companies do only attend the AGP to watch the V8's and that is a simple fact, on that many find hard to believe. In terms of corporate support for the meeting, think of the companies that wouldnt have their corporate facilities if the V8's weren't there; Holden, Ford, Holden Racing Team, Orrcon, Caltex, Betta Electrical, Jack Daniels etc. All have corporate boxes, for 99% v8supercar!

... and some of these companies may be none too pleased if they can't take THEIR "corporates" to the GP.
Winton's great, but not quite the same scene for a bit of wheeling and dealing, and impressing your clients.

I am sure there is demand for corporate facilties outside of these companies aswell.

AGP without V8SC - would result in AGP getting taken off my list of events that I want to go to. Which would probably mean more if I had actually been in the past....

No V8s at Albert Park next year?

O my goodness, has Bernie decided to remove another two pots from the F1 engines?

That is like saying you won't go to the Winton Touring Car round because the Carrera Cup isn't running....

V8's are only a small part of the show at the AGP. The whole reason I went was to experience the F1's, I don't think I even saw a V8 race last time I was there.
