Williams downshift rears it's head again
Rubens, Jaques and Jos have ALL commented on the strange behaviour of the Williams under breaking and downshift subsequent to them running into the back of one of them!
But today Ralf inexplicably had a jerky downshift and spun off on his own. But does this add anything to the claims of the drivers who have been VILIFIED following their "mistakes"?? Or is it merely bad luck that cars run into the rear of the Williams?? Was it a driving error on Ralfies part today?? If so HE'LL no longer be flavour of the month! May be Willy should keep their rear wing slogan form San Marino?? |

It certainly did look like a gearbox problem..whether it was a sticky downshift or something to do with traction control...only time will tell. It was a strange spin because the wheels locked just as he was turning so it was'nt a case of him locking up his brakes. Either he missed a gear on his own...or more than likely something broke and that was the end of Ralf's race.
With all the dramas that unfolded, he could have won the race actually. He was quicker than the other runners behind him and was lapping close to Barrichelo...so you never know. Ralf may be upset...but Juan Montoya should be over the moon...6 points and a reliable BMW Williams. Now if they could only get both cars to the finish..... |

But if there IS a a factor in the design of the Williams gearbox that DOES cause erratic, jerky downshifts, it DOES add to the claims of Rubens, Jos AND Jacques who ALL say that the Williams behaved erratically under breaking. Is there anything in this theory??

There is a theory on the ITV-F1 site that revolves around Williams using a different brake disc supplier to the rest of the field. Its in their "mole" column.

I've just read the article mentioned by Marshal, and it does make some sense, especially the part about giving the brakes a preliminary pump before you stand on them. It does not mention if Williams have given up these brakes, after what happened to Ralf, it would appear not to be the case. If the composites used in these discs are indeed more effective, it could catch a following driver out quite easily. But being able to brake later would be a big advantage in overtaking, obviously very important to Williams, and worth the risk.

Could there be a glitch in their TRACS software, which changed down too many gears and locked the rear wheel?
