KAM should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Turbos coming back in 2011?

Yes turbos will be back - we have the full 2011 engine story in the next issue of Racecar Engineering. They will be fantastically interesting pieces of kit - and we have images of the early designs - you are likely to see a 2 litre turbo V12 in at least two cars...

I think we're looking at one litre turbos here.

I think that the rules have been defered in order to coincide with the introduction of the new engine formula (so that's diesels out the window then...or is it?).Can't help but feel that by the time 2011 comes around that the proposed new regs will be out of date.Seems to be a poorly timed statement with regard to Honda's launch yesterday.

Note: Am so looking forward to the (re)introduction of ABS,TC,AS...BLAH,BLAH,BLAH.

I think it shot down a Klingon battle cruiser or something.

You would have said that about a 2007 F1 car in 1990 anyway.

Actually it looks more futuristic than it really is - the colours are of course all wrong which adds to the effect. Some of the technology ideas in the powertrain can be traced back to propeller driven military aircraft. So its not all space age - in fact the only trick bit is the electronics - oh and getting it all to work - oh and making it small enough...

It looks to be heavily focused on recovering exhaust heat/energy.

It took me a minuite to even figure out what that thing in the picture was.

If they had unrestricted fuels and air intake size I imagine we'd be looking at 0.4-0.6L engines. (the current fuels are suprisingy low octane) Those are likely the ways in which things will be kept under control.

I think it was during the late 90s that McLaren was developing some other types of technologies to capture otherwise wasted energy. I've never read any specifics. Does anyone know what they might have entailed and could they possibly be part of 2011 engines?

Maybe F1 should go to Champ Car's 2.65L turbo methanol (a renewable bio fuel) powered engines. Honda and Toyota already have 1100-1200hp varients sitting in their basements.

Hmm, what about no engine regulations and a limited amount of ethanol per race available? :P

We suggested a few years ago that the amount of fuel available per race is controlled, and reduced by 5% annually.

Yes the above image features exhaust heat recovery, another - unfortunatley secret until our May issue appears recovery system, tubocharging, a 2litre V12, and a semi auto transmission that has perhaps a few additions.

If you are really interested in this stuff I strongly suggest looking at RE March, April, May and June.
