Goodwood, Glover Trophy
Due to ahem "technical difficulties" I didnt get past Portsmouth last Sunday so didnt get to see the Glover Trophy. I hear that the ex-John Love Cooper T79 that nearly won the 67 SA GP driven by Paul Edwards was leading but spun on oil when lapping traffic and took out Fearless Frank Sytner who was running 2nd - anyone see the race? How badly bashed were the cars? Hate to see classic cars get smacked up.

Ah - well, the Glover Trophy was the moment that we decided to make our way from the start/finish straight to Madgwick, so we only heard that there had been a coming together after the event, when Paul Edwards was being interviewed on the PA.
He did say that it didn't look too bad, and that the car should be rebuildable easily. All in all, I thought this year's Goodwood was a lot easier on the cars than in previous seasons. There wasn't so much bent machinery, perhaps because Frank Sytner wasn't allowed to play in the '50s Sportscar event. The scariest one I did see was when Willie Green's Cooper Jaguar caught Justin Law's spinning C-Type, and rode up the wheel. Fortunately, it wasn't too heavy a landing, and both cars finished the race, in 2nd and 3rd. Racing incidents caught out an Elva 200 Formula Junior and the Aston Project 215 (again!). The sudden rainstorm in the Whitsun Trophy caught out a lot of people in the chicane, but I suspect Marshal may have the details of that - I was at Fordwater on the other side of the circuit at the time. And practice incidents will mean repair bills for the Sadler Mk3 Chevy, David Piper's Ferrari 330P2 and a dreadfully bent Lotus Cortina. Also a Healey Silverstone found the barrier at Madgwick and will need some serious straightening before it competes again. But all in all, it was a lot less harsh on the old cars than usual. Kudos, incidentally, to our very own Marshal, who was on flag duties on the exit of the chicane and was VERY quick on the uptake when a C-Type dropped a sumpful of oil on the circuit. He saw the oil before several drivers did...! |

On the subject of Goodwood 2001, is there a website anywhere that gives the race results in full for the whole meeting?

Try Goodwood.co.uk for results - I downloaded em in PDF format from there. By the way Barry I like your Connew story on your site - didnt Motor Sport do an article on it once upon a time? I remember the inspiration coming from a red Surtees or something...
I spoke with Edwards and he reckoned it was the best weekends racing he has had since he came to the UK in 96!! Says he is hooked on Historics now, loved racing Sytner and Attwood, people his Dad could remember!! I think they are old enough to be his Grandparents! Apparently the Cooper had'nt been raced for 30 years, the tyres were 4 years old and the handling was somewhat "frisky" - but he has just come from an F3 Dallara so... |

The T79 and BT4 weren't too badly damaged: one bent front suspension each. We were sort of expecting this after they had been going almost side by side into Woodcote for a couple of laps. Dickie Attwood in third was probably too waiting for it to happen and wisely kept his distance!
I was also at Woodcote during that sudden spell of rain and just two cars went into the gravel, with a Ferrari nearly missing the Lotus that was already there. However, it was rather more of a sensation seeing one of the cars (it was too far away to see which one) plough into the chicane wall, causing the race to be stopped: after the smash the moveable walls were all over the place and especially on the racing line... So the Love car hadn't raced in historics before? Well, hats off to the guys who prepared it. Its straightline speed was amazing. But then again, it was some sort of travesty of history to see that ATS stretching its lead over a pair of Lotuses lap after lap. It goes to show that preparation and driving skills are everything in historics. Oh, but at least the Emeryson and Scirocco lived up to their reputation! |

As previously stated the Cooper and the Brabham in the Glover trophy didn't look too bad, just a couple of corners off in each case. It wasn't entirely unexpected, as I had a bad feeling about Frank Synter racing a modern single seater racer.
Scariest accident of the weekend was the Willie Green / Justin Law tangle in the Freddie March. The cooper of Green went quite a long way up. Willie was fine but when I chatted to him afterwards he did say that he'd like a roll hoop fitted before he raced it again. As for the wiping out of the chicane by Riob Brooks in the Lotus 19, it did a supprising ammount of damage to the car, as he hit the plywood on casters bit of it rather than the polystyrene. We were quite supprised how quickly we managed the Krypton factor bit of getting the right bits of wall back in the right places, but then spent 10 mins potting plants All in all a great weekend, sorry I didn't catch up with Tim or any of the rest of you but with 3 full days and VIP's only behind me it was a bit tricky. Roll on next year. And Tim, thanks about the oil flag, we were a bit concerned that he was going to hit the tyres. |

It was the Aston DB3 that shot past you sideways that got my attention, Marshal...
As for meeting up, well, I tried. I got as close as the historic transporter park before the fence stopped me, and then I spent a couple of sessions trying to get the press enclosure steward to attract your attention! Probably the most difficult marshal's post in the entirety of Goodwood to get to! |

Were you the marshall at the station right in front of the March grandstand with the beard? That was really the place to be, I was watching my videos last night unfortunately I went up into the stands when it started to rain so I missed the best footage. What a great meeting it was a weekend truly to remember. Ursula |
