Re: De Don suspension?
I think you are referring to a De Dion rear axle.
It's called after the french car maker De Dion (one of france's pre eminent manufacturers around 1900). A De Dion axle is an axle in which the rear differential is part of the chassis, while the rear wheels a coupled together with a kind of dead axle. It is a non-independent rear axle design with the advantages (constant track etc), and without most of the disadvatages of a live rear axle (high unsprung weight etc). In production cars it was used on maserati's,Aston Martins and Ferrari's, I believe, and recently on AlfaRomeo's (Alfetta, 75 etc) and the volvo 340. (This is from memory, so maybe I'm mistaken) In racing cars the construction was fairly popular in the thirties and especially the fifties. But in the seventies Ferrari did still try it on a Formula 1 car, I think in 1975. But I doubt it ever raced. mat |
