Nice pic. Looks like they are genuine front wings instead of front diffuser now?

Yes that's one of the biggest aero change for 2014. The reason was to remove the necessity for the le mans body work. They can now trim out the front wing to get less drag.

This is serious stuff! How will the front wing be adjusted? Is there a front or back connection to tilt?

According to Autosport (UK)'s digital magazine for this week (pg 11), the driver trios for the LMP1 for the full season have been decided: Webber/Bernhard/Hartley and Dumas/Lieb/Jani.

Therefore Timo and Romain get split up again...

V4, No electric turbo

Not sure how trustworthy the source is, some of their information isn't up to date. Tested last week at Bahrain apparently.

According to the autocar article, the 919 is equipped with a "Abgasenergierueckgewinnung" (exhaush energy recovery) system. That sounds a lot like an electric turbo (or a F1 MGU-H).

Yeah, the article said that the energy recovered from the exhaust gases is used alongside the KERS-harvested energy and sent to the front wheels.

I couldn't find it at first, 'cus I went straight to the hybrid bit, where it does sound like that and similar to Audi. However right at the beginning it says unlike Audi.

According to motorsport-total.com, Porsche had suffered drastic problems with the V4 until the end of last year. The engine had generated heavy vibrations that lead to damage on the car. This behavior came up on the track and was not visible on the dyno before. They had to do "comprehensive modifications" of the engine's insides.

Apart from that, there was not only the vehicle fire but also several other accidents on tracks.
They had used the wind tunnel of Dallara in italy and shifted to a "commercial wind tunnel in Great Britain", probably to the one in South Hampton.

That indicate some serious modifications and probably resulting in Porsche being behind schedule!
Fortunately Porsche had started the project in good time, so they should be able to afford these unforeseen "hiccups"

I believe the reason why they choose V4 is packaging issues-have to make room for enough batteries instead of more compact flywheel.

Yet its odd that Porsche would go with a design that is known to vibrate and cause problems, when they usually go the safe route that they know will last for 24hours, which has been their signum ever since the 70s.

On the other hand, I think Porsche also has a history of "There is no problem we can't solve via creative engineering". Taking the drive off the center of the crank on the 917, or even their initial insistence on developing their own disk brake rotor system (back in the 50s/60s and it had the caliper on the inside vs. the outside) instead of licensing the design we all use today.

If the reports are true (I take them with a grain of salt), I find it hard to believe that they somehow "missed" vibration loading issues on the dyno. Maybe it was more of a case of the chassis or other drivetrain parts couldn't handle the expected/actual amount of vibration.

Cripes, does sound like the V4 has bitten them on the backside

I think there is some misunderstanding of the type of turbos used by Audi and Porsche.........they are both the same.......just like used in F1......there is a motor-generator unit coupled to the compressor side of the turbos shaft, which can generate small amounts of power in steady-state operation, plus as a form of anti-lag the motor-generator can also spin the turbo-shaft up to an operating speed........but otherwise both are primarily powered by the exhaust gas as per a traditional turbo.
