Puzzles me that the amount of prize money in F1 isn't well publicised (unlike Wimbledon tennis, Champions League or any other sport you care to mention)
Why not? Is it some big secret? I know loads dosh is made with sponsorship and stuff like that BUT How much for coming first in each Grand Prix, second, third? Are there separate money prizes for drivers and manufacturers? How much for overall win for the season? Thanks for any info you have  Ian G

I think it varies depending on the driver and who they drive for. For example, a Ferrari win bonus might be more than a McLaren win bonus (actually, it probably is because McLaren are stingy).

RG, I think you're confusing prize money with salary, contract bonuses and advertising royalties. I think what Mr Geeza was referring to was the FIA prize distribution, including 'income' from TV rights and appearance money. We had a thread on this topic 'way back when'. I'll see if I can find it.

OK, How about these figures for the 2000 season... All teams earned approximately $6.5 million as a fixed amount, and in addition, a certain percentage based on their final positions. This was be distributed as follows: Ferrari $13m McLaren $11.3m Williams $8.7m Bennetton $7m BAR $6.5m Jordan $6m Arrows $4.6m Sauber $4.2m Jaguar $3.3m Mianrdi $2.6m Prost Grand Prix did not recieve any bonus, as they placed outside the top ten. There is also 47% of the revenue from the TV rights, which is just under $120m ($250m total)  Hope this helps! |

Plus all teams, bar Prost, will get free transport to all the events in 2001. Must be worth a few million as well. Just think, do away with the above prize monies and it could be free entry to all GP's, just a nasty thought as I know how everyone loves handing over £100's to Bernies empire. SL
