CBS/NBC Deal Reached
According to the Champ Car website, CCWS has reached a deal with CBS and NBC to air 6 races in the 2005 season.
Here's the link for the article Basically CBS will air 4 races (Milwaukee, Portland, Cleveland, and Toronto) and NBC wil air 2 (Long Beach and Montreal) Kudos to Champ Car for pulling this deal! |

Im not trying to put this deal down or anything because I dont know anything about either network.
But how can having a series split on 2 or even 3 different networks be good for the series itself ? I know here in australia we now get our aussie rules football code split on 2 channels and it just makes it confusing as to what channel you should be watching. are any real benefits from splitting the races up ??? But Im glad they are (or have) got some godd TV for 05 |

I agree that having the series run on 3 networks (CCWS will have races on the 2 networks plus a cable channel to be determined later), but maybe spreading it out can help increase the fanbase by attracting new viewers.
Over here in the US, this is not an unusual practice, for both NASCAR and the IRL airs races on network TV and cable during their seasons. And Champ CArs has done this in the past as well. I try to look at the positive of things :-) |

I think that it was important to air the races live, and in some cases, like with CBS, it would interfere with golf.

Most of the Champ Car season is run during the football off season. The NFL only runs 16 weeks, not including playoffs and the Superbowl. Playoffs are a 1 game elimination format, so the NFL is really a non-issue. Baseball, Hockey and Basketball are much longer seasons.

I see the downside of a network split but I beleive the upside outweighs it by a longshot. It seems likely to me that more people will be exposed to Champ Car by accident on the major networks than will tune in on purpose with the cable setup of either Spike or Speed. Compared to this time last year........

CBS has a lot of its identity wrapped up in golf, which is why 2112's comment is appropriate - at least moreso than in commenting on the other sports coverage.

I didnt take into account a wider spread of viewers , I guess that could really be a good thing.
anyway I hope it works out for the best. does anyone know if the champcar site will be running race director again in 05 ? (my only chance of seeing live races ) |

As long as ChampCar is still shown live(ish) in Britain, I'm a happy guy.
