Speed event license

Ok, Im a rally marshal grade 2, and a "trainee" circuit marshal. The big problem I face is that most of the events I marshal are speed events (mainly sprints) this means I can't get a signature on my trainee upgrade form, which means I am going to be a trainee for a long time, becauase I dont do that many race meetings. Im fairly experinced now and marshal at Goodwood most weekends through the season, is there a speed license, so I can at lease progress within my choosen disipline ?

All the best, keep up the good work.

Simon.

Hi Simon,
Within the MSA there currently isn't any form of speed licence, but the BMMC have their own training scheme for speed events (and kart events) - details on the BMMC Grading Manual (from Page 12)

I'm sure some of the regular hill climb/speed marshals will be able to add extra points on it in the near future!

Hello Simon

I am a trainee speed marshal and I am currently upgrading to an experienced marshal. Like circuits, you need 10 signatures over a 2-year period, one fire fighting training session and one introductory training session. You can get a grading card from your regional grading officer.

One thing I would like know is if anyone explain what are the differences between speed grades compared to the circuit grades, for example is an experienced marshal at speed events, the same an incident officer at circuit?

It may be the same as Incident marshal but not Incident Officer I suspect.

Andrew, as a Clerk of the Course for Sprints, I can tell you that an experienced marshal at a speed event is different to an IO at a circuit. Most speed events only have one vehicle on the track at a time and the duties of the marshals differ because of this. Most speed event marshals I know can do most of the jobs involved in sprinting, ranging from Startline to Course Controller and everything in between.

Simon, if you have a grading card for speed events and don't have anyone on post with you to sign it (if you have actually done something during the day, of course!) you can always take it to the Clerk of the Course and request him/her to sign it for you.

The grades are not the same, but they tend to give a guide as to the marshal's aptitude and experience. Technically there isn't an I/O grade on sprints as it goes straight to observer. At the events I attend this is reasonable as the I/O usually has the radio/comms. Again, at speed events start line and finish paddock tend to be regarded as posts, so that incident marshals may rotate through them, although in practice they tend to attract specialists. Shiela is right though, in that most of us will have experienced both of these at some time. Course Control is a little more specialized, but again, someone who is CC at one venue does Rescue at another and incident elsewhere.

The speed grades are currently BMMC only. The good news is you can have 4 race signatures on your speed card and vice versa. Curiously, Rallycross is also covered by the speed grading structure.

Sheila, I think you'll find that Curborough is the ONLY sprint course where there is one car on track at a time. Most venues are licensed for at least two, mainly three and on some occasions four. Admittedly they are not on the same piece of track at the same time!

One thing that I have noticed as I go round the country is the differing standards of marshalling at speed events. This varies from the highly skilled marshals at venues like Loton Park and Aintree to the downright abysmal at Knockhill. Is there a National Standard to which Speed Marshals should be graded or is it down to the individual CoC to decide?

Yes, I know what you mean. I'd got my circuit grade and had never bothered pursuing my speed grade. I got a card, but beyond that... the first signature was 8 years before the last, and I still can't sign cards, but I can point you in the direction of someone who can!

Still, I'm pleased to be able to wear a badge which reads "Experienced Speed." I haven't, your Honour, honestly.
