kelvin88 should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Calling all Freelanders!

Ok, I have been asked by an engineering firm in Sussex to ask you if any of you are Land Rover Freelander owners, and, if you are, would you consider an engine conversion?

The options would be,

Chevrolet V8

2lt Ford Zetec

Honda Vtec

The discussion came up as a matter to deal with the unreliability of the K series unit. Any thoughts anyone?

Not my problem! But probably going longitudal and changing the running gear and suspension too. We threw that in to see how many people would consider a conversion to make the Freelander a "keeper" as an every day road car against how many would only consider an engine conversion to make some serious grunt.

The Honda is easiest, the Zetec is cheapest and the Chevy is, well... a Chevy.

I work on a fair few Freelanders and Range Rovers. Seeing that you can buy a Freelander for peanuts because of the head gasket problems (apart from that it wasn't a bad engine) its probably worth looking into an alternative power unit and the Zetec 2lt would be a good option and readily available.
I fitted a new modified 4 Lt V8 into a Range Rover last year as most of the originals suffered from the liners moving and cracking.
Although that was a success it would have been cheaper to have brought a different type of 4x4 that had no problems.
Of course when vehicles get on a bit its not just the engine that wears out, but everything else from the drivers seat to the wheel bearings.
So how far do you go ?

That would have been far too sensible . Also in the Stag, WTF was that all about !
I suppose as the factory was going down the pan they had to get rid of a load of K series lumps or flog them for scrap !
As I said the original engine wasn't too bad when it was designed and worked pretty well in its 1400 cc guise as the head being held on by long bolts into a cradle with the cylinder bock sandwiched between was quite a good idea, but as usual they had to stretch it out (like the later bigger V8s) and incured all the problems with the bigger bores.
Why didnt they just design them both to be a bigger cc and sleave them down to suit the smaller cars or is that too easy ?
