I think Porsche may use a V6 engine, instead of a 4-cyl. V6 is closer to Porsche production and philosophy. No car with a 4L in the pricelist, so I think it would not have sense to run in Le Mans with a such engine. Then, a V6 (or however a 6 cylinders), would have a better torque in confront of a 4-cyl.
And then, if VW would really like to take place in F1, experiencing a V6-turbocharged engine, would have great chances of success for its debut in singleseater (maybe as engine supplier).
I expect a Porsche competitive since its first season, due to the huge internal rivalry with Audi. Ingolstadt brand has played in the Porsche field so long, but without a real strong and long-time competitors, as it happened for Porsche with Ferrari, Lancia, Jaguar, Renault, etc.
You can be sure Porsche is interested to show it is yet Le Mans "owner", while Audi cousins were just some entertainers in confront of Stuttgart men.

I think Hatz has confirmed that it wont be a six-cylinder. (Not too sure due to Google translation)

I hope these are pre-tactical declarations about the engine. A 4-cylinders is not a logic choice for Porsche but... afterall, the most important thing is to win Le Man for the 17th time!

No, the most important is to provide good competition - not just to take over the Audi 'steamroller' mantle.....

What about a flat 4? Or has a flat engine been ruled out?

That is a bad translation. The German article says that it will not be a boxer, nor a straight 6 engine.

kein Boxer, kein Reihen-Sechszylinder = no boxer, no inline 6 cilinder

So that leaves a V6 and I4. And according to knighty sources it is a I4.

I don't see either a V6 or I4 as being particularly different (and haven't we been led to believe it is a particularly interesting choice.) Is the potential for a V4 still there? I believe Porsche has some design experience in that area (design for Harley Davidson awhile back).

This is a quite off topic. Sorry.
Professor Yoshimasa Hayashi (Tokai Univ) had developed "unusual" V4 engine (Although it's not a racing engine).
It is 8.5 degree (!) single head V4 engine, named YR20.

Interesting. A bit like the old VW VR6 engines, which also had a single cilinder head.

Google tells me Lancia did a narrow angle V4 back in the 60's for the Fulvia.

I am really curious as to what Porsche has done. It will be funny if it is nothing particularly different.

I don expect anything mind altering. I think that the "unusual" comment refers to the engine layout being "unusual" for Porsche.

While I haven't been able to weigh the source, a V4 has been mentioned to me regarding Porsche's engine.

it could be half of the 918's engine + turbo. The 918 4.6 V8 engine weighs only 140 kilos.

That engine has been derived from the V8 that ran in the RS Spyder. They might as well use that. But why would they do that if they can build a ground up new engine that suits their needs.

Really disappointed for Vettes! They've always had the fastest car in the last years, but I cannot understand how they can be so penalized by the BoP! For a works team is not good to be in Le Mans just to be there, without any real chance to win! Corvette last years would have won a race it was dominating, if it wasn't for a wheel failure!
Bad thing, to exclude Vettes from the podium. It's not right. Expecially when Aston are so helped by BoP!
I hope they may close the gap in a way or another, to see them fighting for the final win!

It seems Corvette have been caught out by the lack of testing on the new Michelin tire. The car is essentially same spec as last year but they cant even match last years pace. They'll have to analyze the data and adjust because they know they need to go faster otherwise.
