This weeks print edition of Autoweek says that the budget for Dodge '13 Cup program has not been approved and may not. They think the return on the Viper ALMS campaign may give better results.

Quote:
Dodge will skip first test for 2013 cars: While Dodge has a car approved for 2013, it will skip the first tire test for the 2013 car next week at Martinsville Speedway. Dodge is still looking for teams to campaign its 2013 Dodge Charger in Sprint Cup. Its only manufacturer-backed team, Penske Racing, announced in March that it would switch to Ford. Since that announcement, Dodge has continued to meet all the deadlines and work on its 2013 body despite not having a team signed for 2013. "Earlier this week, NASCAR announced that all four manufacturers have met the necessary targets for their 2013 Sprint Cup Series race cars," said Beth Paretta, director of marketing and operations for the SRT Brand and Motorsports. Due to the lack of time to prepare for the on-track test for the 2013 cars scheduled next week at Martinsville, we have elected to forgo that test opportunity." Scheduled to test the cars next week are #29-Kevin Harvick and #48-Jimmie Johnson in Chevrolets, #99-Carl Edwards in a Ford and #56-Martin Truex Jr. in a Toyota. Even though it will miss this test, there will be plenty of tests for Dodge to participate in and get ready for 2013 if it signs teams to run its cars.(Sporting News)(8-2-2012)

Without a major team it doesn't make sense to stay in NASCAR.

Don't know if I consider Furniture Row a "major team".

Furniture Row to buy Penske engine program? Kurt Busch in second FRR car? UPDATE: Nobody is talking on the record, still, but unofficial word from the NASCAR engine building world Sunday morning is that Barney Visser [#78 Furniture Row Racing], the Denver, Col., businessman is considering buying the Dodge engine department from Roger Penske. With Penske moving to Fords for 2013, and with Penske -- according to Jack Roush -- agreeing to run Roush-Yates Ford FR9s next season, the future of Penske's huge engine department has been the subject of much debate. Now word is that some of Penske's top engine men will be moving to the Roush-Yates engine department, and that Visser will be taking many of the rest, along with Penske's engine building equipment, and Visser will thus be switching from Chevy to Dodge. And -- though again no one is talking on the record -- it appears that Visser is very interested in hiring Kurt Busch to team with Smith next season.(MikeMulhern.net)(8-5-2012)
UPDATE: Furniture Row Racing is prepared to switch from Chevy to Dodge in 2013 if the manufacturer chooses to go in that direction. Furniture Row general manager Joe Garone said Sunday at Pocono Raceway that there have been initial talks with Dodge about making a switch and adding a second team, potentially with 2004 Sprint Cup champion Kurt Busch. "If Dodge comes to us and says here's the right deal, we would do it," Garone said. "They're trying to figure out who they're going to do it with and how they're going to do it." Furniture Row currently gets its chassis from Richard Childress Racing and engines from Earnhardt Childress Racing. Everything else is built in the organization's Denver shop. Garone said the organization intends to keep driver Regan Smith, who won at Darlington Raceway last year, beyond this season. He said there have been talks with Busch about expanding, but that would depend on finding a sponsor or a manufacturer willing to give financial help. Garone said he has not given Dodge a deadline for making a decision, but he'd like to know sooner than later. Garone said they are waiting on a decision from Dodge before completing a deal with Smith. "It's our intention to bring him back," Garone said. "With all this other stuff pending, you don't make a commitment and find there is another avenue we should have taken."(ESPN.com)(8-5-2012)

Well said. Perhaps they should think of adding Hyundai or Volkswagen to NASCAR...

Then again, having 3 manufacturers is enough for 2013 and beyond.

How so? They left in the 70's, came back in the early 2000s, started strong and then petered out. About the time of the mercedes splitup they pretty much pulled most of their efforts to only being a single team with Penske. At this point they're a non factor.

Could Tuesday be D-Day – as in the day Dodge pulls out of NASCAR again?

Sources tell FOXSports.com that a press release is scheduled for Tuesday to discuss the manufacturer’s plans for 2013 – and it doesn’t include NASCAR.

Monday’s announcement that Penske Racing will use Roush Yates engines next year was originally held to allow Dodge time to announce its plans for 2013 first – at least that’s been the plan since June. However, weeks turned to months and Team Ford’s patience ran out as Dodge dawdled with its NASCAR plans.

However, SRT Motorsports has ramped up its involvement with the Dart in Global RallyCross and the Viper GTS-R made its first return to the American Le Mans Series since 2000 last weekend at Mid-Ohio. The GTS-Rs will run a limited schedule in 2012 to prepare for a full campaign with two factory-backed teams next year.

Following a 23-year absence in the sport, Dodge returned to NASCAR competition in 2000 under the guidance of championship crew chief Ray Evernham. Dodge currently fields two teams in NASCAR under the Penske Racing banner. Penske announced in February, however, that the company would campaign Fords for the 2013 season leaving Dodge without a comparable alternative.

It's sad to say that Dodge will be gone in NASCAR, even though they showed their 2013 Cup Bodies...

Gordon Kirby published one of his typical 500-mile articles on the 2013 Cup cars. It's not just new bodies as this thread's says, but the car will get much lighter. Here's some quotes from the manufacturer heads:

"Because the cars are so heavy they have to build tires that can hold up to that. In effect what it's turned into is drivers can run qualifying laps every single lap and rarely hurt a tire. So they're throwing some major changes to the ratio of aero to mechanical grip and let Goodyear work on doing some development to bring some tires that you can't run qualifying laps on every lap. So it will put it a little bit back into the driver's style and how hard they can push. If you overuse a tire you're going to pay for it at the end of the stint as far as lap time is concerned. "

So like in F1, Nascar wants cars that drivers can't run as fast as they could. They want drivers to drive slower on bad tires.

"We wanted to lock in the areas that we knew you could make big adjustments for big performance gains, but also leave open the areas where it really doesn't matter. We wanted to make it so you could also put a lot of style and character into the cars."

What's the point of that?

NNS grid cut to 40 from 43 next year due to too many S&Ps I presume.

NASCAR Saturday unveiled a new look for the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series car, an integral and exciting step in the rollout process of the sixth generation race car.

“These changes are an extension of the unprecedented collaboration with the auto manufacturers on the 2013 car, great industry feedback and our focus on increasing fan affinity as part of NASCAR’s Industry Action Plan,” said Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR senior vice president of racing operations, who introduced the new design at Homestead-Miami Speedway today.

The sixth-generation car look will debut with the opening of the 2013 Speedweeks, highlighted by the 55th running of the Daytona 500 on February 24 at Daytona International Speedway. Among the updates:

• The driver’s last name featured on the windshield;
• Sponsor decals will not be permitted on the headlights and taillights, two key distinguishing characteristics of the auto manufacturers’ brand;
• Car numbers will be moved from the lights to the front and rear bumpers;
• A single sponsor logo will be permitted on the roof under the number;
• Team sponsor decals will be permitted to extend past the front edge of the b-post;
• “Step and repeat” / background patterns will be permitted on the sides of the car;
• Due to the slightly smaller car, the car number will be reduced by 10 percent and the contingency decals will be reduced to 26 square inches.

The new Chevrolet will be unveiled on Thursday, Nov. 29, in Las Vegas during NASCAR Champion’s Week.

That looks nothing like the actual Fusion, more like an Aston (front) and a Honda Accord (sides).

Have you seen the new Fusion? That's exactly how I would describe the street car, looks like a high school kid used photoshop too much. The gril/lightsl look fine but wow is the hood(bonnet) ugly as sin and looks like they just HAD to have the AM grill opening and told the designers just make it work with a sedan. Although it looks MUCH better in the black over the red and blues I've seen on the street.

I looked again. I swear, it still looks like someone took an Aston Martin, chopped off the entire part of it before the windshield, and slapped it onto this.

The cars look great, but I am afraid that they might lose their lines with the kinds of paint schemes you see in NASCAR. The PEAK Toyota of Bowyer looks a lot different from the all-black Camry testing at Texas. Of course, the car may have been a little different as as how car (I hope...the one at Texas looks awesome).

I feel like the nose has changed since the unveiling of the Toyota car and the two MWR cars.

It could be the angle or the black, but it looks less squished (and a lot better).

So far, every 2013 Chevrolet SS NASCAR Sprint Cup car that’s shown up for testing has looked like something from a Rorschach test or maybe a psychedelic experiment from the 1960s gone horribly wrong, but that’s about to change.

Up until now, Chevy has insisted that the SS always run in a bizarre black-and-white wrap to conceal its true appearance.

Finally, on Nov. 29 at the Wynn Las Vegas, Chevrolet will show the SS off in real race trim, minus the headache-inducing graphics.

The street version of the SS will be based on Australian Holden VE Commodore, a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sedan. The SS also bears a close resemblance to the late, lamented Pontiac G8, another Holden-based sedan.
